Black cherry salad bowl

Mike Schwing from Md.

>This is a black cherry salad bowl, (or whatever bowl), 14" wide at the rim, from a tree that blew over just down from my house. Sanded to 320 and given two coats of Mahoney's Walnut oil. It'll get a coat of wax but no buffing as I know this'll go straight to food use by the new owner. Not sure I'm in love with the rim treatment, makes the bowl look a bit "thick". Your comments welcomed, good/bad/whatever encouraged, and thanked.

>Hi mike, Beautiful bowl. I was thinking just the opposite about the rim actually. I think it makes the bowl look rather thin for a salad bowl at first glance. I can see now that it is substantial enough for passing around the table full of salad. The detail on the foot is a really nice touch.

I like it!

>I agree with Jennifer. It takes away the "thick" look of most salad bowls. It looks very dainty but I can see it is still quite substantial.

I guess my previous comment about carving is not valid. A silly question...do you ride your bike in circles too? (grin)

>Mike,

I really like the bottom treatment, the ring surronding your name is a very nice touch. The rim with its flair on the outside and dip on the inside, I think, must look better in person than in the pics. I think that the rim looks the best with little pic on the bottom right of the three pic set. It may just be an optical thing with the angle of the shot vs the feel of the real thing. That said I would be very proud to serve ceaser salad in that bowl on my table.

>Mike - I like the photo on the bottom right also. From that angle the rim looks very nice. I think the rim treatment distinguishes the bowl from an ordinary salad bowl. The overall shape is also very nice. I like how it ends small at the bottom.

A follow up photo of the lower right angle would be nice.

>Hi Mike,

Yes I think it makes it look a little thick also, but I am sure most people will love it anyway. I struggle with rim choices as well. But I do love your base treatment. Very nice work. I just had a black cherry come down in the yard yesterday as well. I enjoy working with this wood. Looks like I will have a supply for a while, but probably around 10" or so at max.

Keep up the good work

Ed
