OPINION PLEASE

Jim King

>In 20 plus years in the Amazon the only peice of Kingwood I have ever held was a sample brought here from a dealer in Pheonix. I have since lost the sample. I would like opinions as to if anyone with experience with Kingwood beleives this is the real thing. The photo shows more purple than it really is. It has brownish tints and burgandy also. It will take me several weeks to have this verified in the States and there are several trees available now in a road clearing project and if anyone thinks it is in fact Kingwood I will bring it in. In all my books and internet information I have been unable to find a photo of the cell structure, bark or leaves. Extremly hard and heavy. This peice is 8" x 10 ". It turns to a shine without laquer. Thanks for any help , it would be appreciated.

>Kingwood and Cocobolo are close relatives. This sample does not appear to be either. From my experience, Kingwood's grain is very similar to that of Cocobolo, but with more brown coloration instead of the orangey tones of Cocobolo.

>Look like Kingwood to me.

Like any wood, soil variations and growing conditions can make a different colored wood out of two trees growing right next to each other.

Looks like the Kingwood I used to get.

>That looks like it could very well be kingwood. I had a piece recently that looked very similar, even down to the light sapwood. Glad you said it was not that purple, mine was a bit purple but darker. Mine was sanded so there is a little difference. When turned or drilled it smelled like rosewood. It is a great dense, hard, close grained wood that is very expensive. I suspect you got some great wood.

>I'm not sure if its Kingwwod or not. It might be easier to see on the quarter sawn grain. Even if it is not Kingwood, the traits you described would make it very desirable for turning.

>Looks like Kingwood to me. I have some I bought at Woodcraft several years ago and made a humidor out of it. I have the scraps. Would you like a piece? Perhaps I could slice it really thin and fax it to you.....Just kidding, E-mail would be faster. Seriously, I could send you sample if you like. I suppose Woodcraft sold me the real stuff, they sure charged enough.

Whatever it is, you should get it. I have some walnut I would happily trade for it. We could trade by the pound to make it fair.

E-mail me if you want the sample. Are there any restrictions on shipping wood?

>Barry: It is very difficult to send samples in or out of Peru but thanks for the offer. I am not sure if the wood is in fact Kingwood but I have processed about 100 bowl blanks and am going to bring in a couple thousand bf more as I like it no matter what it is even if it is as hard as stone. Jim

>Of course, I can't say whether it's kingwood or not, but on the face of it, it's not inconsistent with the kingwood I've turned.

BTW, I understand my son, Aaron, may be visiting you soon. I think you'll enjoy meeting him.

>I have no experience with Kingwood but have used a bit of Cocobolo.

I came across this website recently that has "color correct" pictures of all kinds of woods the world over {links to the Kingwood page}:

http://www.hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/kingwood.htm

Bear in mind that the author is rather opinionated though IMO the pictures are right on for the various species I'm personally familiar with.
