Respirators

Ken George

>Would like to resurrect the respirator issue. I just searched the past year and came up short. After roughing some logs yesterday using just a face shield my nasal passages were complaining and running some ugly stuff.

What is your recommendation for respirators? The Trend Airshield looks like a good unit but is it heavy and burdensome on the head?

Is the Triton unit with the belt supported battery lighter and less burdensome? Or is there other options?

I have read stories about turners developing lung problems due to dust and don't want to join their ranks.

Thanks,

Ken

>This is the type I usually use (the picture at the top). I wear it under the face shield. I think the industrial respirators provide the best filtering. It also eliminates glasses fogging as you will often get with the paper dust masks. The thread discusses other options.

>The airshield is not that bad and you will get used to it very fast, really pretty light. Very nice unit and can be worn for hours with no problem.

If you decide on it make sure to get an extra battery, that way one is always ready to go.

>I have been wearing respirators at work and play for over 15 years. If I use the type of paper respirator with 2 bands and form the nose I dont fog my glasses. I prefer the paper masks when working with nuisance dust because they dont get sweaty and sit lighter on the face. I have worn full face and half face respirators and prefer to wear positive pressure when working with hazardous materials (H2S, and other nasties). The biggest thing is to find one that you are comfortable with and wear it. Also if you can find someone to fit test the mask all the better.

I use the Trend...

>Hi Ken,

I bought the Triton and didn't like it. Too much "stuff" on my head...felt way too bulky. Got the Trend instead. Heavier than a regular faceshield, but I got use to it very quickly. I don't even notice the weight anymore.

>I used a Racal (3M) for a couple of years and upgraded to the Triton when it fist hit the market. I used it now for all sorts of dust-related tasks beyond just turning. I can give it a 'thumbs up'.
