VERY SERIOUS WARNING !

Fred in NC

>If you are already a turner, and are considering making pens, think about it before you start. While penmaking has not been taken seriously by most woodturners, those of us who have engaged in in this nonsensical activity have suffered the consequences.

The production of autographic instruments, known by the uninitated simply as pens, is one of the most addictive endeavors known to mankind. This is especially true when a person discovers that our ancestors used a more suitable type of pen, called a fountain pen, which was the pride and joy of its owners. This tradition has been replaced by the use of cheap and ugly disposable sticks with a ballpoint, which we consider a disgrace to the owner.

Those like me who have discovered penturning, are affected by an incurable disease. Medical science is still investigating the cause to no avail. There are all kinds of strange chemical substances in the wood, adhesives, and finishes used in penmaking. They all affect the penturners brain. However a direct relationship to a crazed brain has not been defined. There is also the psychological effect from the people who see, and even dare to purchase, such admirable writing instruments.

The condition is worse when a person has already been engaged in other aspects of woodturning. Then it becomes a comorbid condition, like a disease within another disease. Split personalities and torn shirt pockets are common symptoms.

The advice of a professional BSD is highly advised before you engage in this occupation.

If you don't believe my warning, just read what I wrote above, and decide for yourself if it is normal . . .

(I think I could make a pen out of flatulence if I had enough CA)

>Addiction?

I started with a "free" old Sears lathe and some free Craftsman tools in November. I'm now the proud owner of a Nova 3000, several Sorby and other gouges, Wolverine grinding jig, two grinders, I can't count how many different types of finishes, 150 watt lights for the lathe, Oneway Stronghold chuck, several assorted mandrels, drill chuck, more sandpaper than I've ever used in my life doing flat woodwork, and some buffing wheels.

My living room is full of assorted bowls and platters. My kitchen counter has the hollowform posted above, and a rack I made to hold 18 winestoppers (its full) and some stoppers are laying around it.

I did sell enough winestoppers to almost pay for the Stronghold.

Second thought, maybe I'll wait to buy the pen "starter kit".
