One more Nova 3000 Issue - Pulley Belt

Dan Lanicek in TX

>I recently bought a used Nova 3000 and I think I have the tailstock issues under control but I'm having a pulley belt issue now.

Maybe it's just that I need to get used to adjusting the belt for the Nova but it seems that the stepped pulley of the motor does not line up with the stepped pulley of the spindle.

The first night I had the lathe I moved the belt to a certain speed and ran the lathe. After a minute or so, the headstock starting rattling. A look inside revealed that the belt was rubbing against the side of the next larger pulley and had partially torn due to the friction. User error - I did not seat the belt properly on the grooves.

Now I'm very conscious when I move the belt making sure it does not rub against the sides. This is not easy because it seems that the pulleys are not aligned exactly and the belt wants to adjust itself. I can get it to work but it takes me a minute or two to make sure it's working.

I tried adjusting the pulley on the motor side but after loosening the set screw on the shaft the pulley would not budge at all. Is there more than one set screw? Any other solutions? Maybe this will become a non-issue once I get used to moving the belt?

>The tolerances on the nova pulleys are very tight. It will really wear the belt out prematurely if they aren't lined up together. A good investment would be a gear puller from an auto parts store. It will make it much easier to pull the pulley off the shaft.

>Dan,

I had the same problem, first you must align the pulleys perfectly and make sure the pulley set screw is very tight. To align the pulleys you must figure out just how much the pulley needs to move one way or the other, then remove the motor from the lathe, scribe or somehow mark the current position of the pulley and after removing the set screw, using a block of wood, tap the pulley to where it needs to go, once it is there, reinstalll the motor and when you put in the belt, leave the last rib out, so the belt does not rub any shoulders, I think the only step where you engage all the ribs is in the smallest.

Good luck

>The Nova manual indicates that the belt is noty supposed to fit in the last groovew on the pulley. The outside rib should not be on the pulley. That way the inside rib will not rub on the rim of the indsiede pulley. You can also procure a 4 ribbed belt form a Gates dealer and then all the ribs will be on the pulley.

>Thanks for the replies. I was able to loosen and move the pulley on the spindle. It works MUCH better now!
