Dancing Kids W/pic

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>This is a maple bowl that I made for a donation to my son's Montessori School Silent Auction this Saturday. I wanted something to donate that would hopefully stand out from the other items of gift certificates and package deals at Chucky Cheese Pizza and such. I'm hoping that these little Dancing Kids will steal the heart of a teacher or somebody who will be willing to bump the bidding, as it's all about making $$ for the school. I've been to these before and I think sometimes everybody forgets that it's about raising money and not getting a deal! Anyway, these little kids are the final result of some doodling and trying to come up with something other than stick people which is about my limit when it comes to drawing people. After I got a few of them drawn it got easier to animate them and show them having lots of fun. I had a blast making this bowl and I hope to do a lot more of them!

It's about 10" diameter and 3" deep. Burned and colored with Prisma markers. Finished with Krylon Fixatif and Watco Finishing Wax.

As always all comments are welcome.

Thanks for checking in on the kids!

Jennifer

>Jennifer, this is really neat. My daughter, who has run a pre-school for a lot of years would be delighted with this. You're doing some really great stuff with the burning, painting, carving and more. Adds a whole lot to a piece, when after putting the bowl gouge on the rack, you're not even half finished. Having fun?

By not knowing what to expect, this method of viewing has brought me many surprises here recently.

I am smileing broadly while looking at this bowl. It is such a delight. Thank you for sharing it.

Dan.

>Very nice piece, Jennifer. I hope who ever buys this piece will appreciate all the work that went into it. I have donated a couple of pieces to fund-raising auctions and from the comments I heard, I don't think very many folks had a clue what they were looking at.

>Hi Jennifer,

This is a really special piece! Hopefully, the kids on the bowl will remind the adults spending money what the money is for :)

I donated a bowl to my son's school for their spring fund raiser about two weeks ago and while it did bring in some money, I was a little disappointed that it didn't go for more. Mostly because it was all money for the school and a little because I thought the bowl was worth more :)

The upside is that I happened to be sitting near the people who bought it, and for the next hour, the lady sat there just absentmindedly running her hands over the bowl and feeling the finish and shape. She seemed to enjoy it and I really enjoyed just watching her with the piece.

Good luck with the fund raiser, hopefully the parents will remember it is for the school!

Thanks for the pics, that's a top 5 one in my book!

>Jen: I well know about people "getting a good deal". I have been discouraged too many times, and now I don't donate any of my "special" turnings anymore. The run of the mill production stuff seems to do just about as well at a charity afair.

>Jennifer....that is a great piece and I hope it does well in the auction. I am going to a Girl Scout fund raising funtion on Saturday and I have 4 donated pieces and a few of my friends donated another half dozen pieces. I am looking forward to seeing if they bring in the money I expect. I have my mind set for disappointment but am ready to jump for joy if they do well. I and a friend already scraped together $1500 for a table for four at this event and I will bid some of the items up if I have to and bring them home with me if the prices are too low. If they come close to what I think the value is, then they will go home with someone else. I absolute refuse (to the aches and pain of my checking account) to allow some cheapskate to walk out of there on the "cheap". This is their first fund raising event and there will be a lot of people there with lots of money that can afford to pay high dollar for all the auction items. I went to a Montesorri auction recently where the kids in various classes did projects for the live auction and the bidding between families was as fierce as anything I have ever seen. For instance, a calloborative painting by one class went for $11,500....that is half the price of a decent automobile. A Harley Davidson bicycle worth about $1,500 went for $3,600. This is what makes an auction exciting. Good Luck Jennifer!!!

>Thank you Jerry,

I appreciate your comments. I just donated a couple bowls to a very big fundraiser on Monday night for the AIDS foundation here in Indy and was told that there was going to be a bunch of doctors and basically people that I would assume are fairly well off financially. Sadly the nicest bowl I donated only brought in $70.00 for a 12" maple that was textured and dyed black inside. I didn't set a minimum bid, but I would have hoped it would have gotten at least $100.00....especially with the crowd that was suppose to be there. It was a black tie event. Oh, well....I suppose they just may not have liked my bowl. Harrumph!

I really want to do some more of these. Weston has already told me that if I donated this one to the auction that I HAVE to make another one!

I've got a few ideas brewing in my tiny little brain :)

Thanks for your kind comments.

>Wally, thanks so much. You know I use to be so glad when the turning was done and I got a bowl off the lathe in one piece....now I can't wait to get it off just to get to the good part! I am having SO much fun with the "after lathe" stuff.I'm a far cry from a lot of the folks arond here and over at WOW but I'm learning something new on each piece. I'm hoping that spending a week with Betty at Arrowmont this summer really gets me in a creative groove.

Seems like you've been having a bit of fun with the colors and burner too Wally!

Thanks again...
