Nova 3000 tailstock problems

Dan Lanicek in TX

>I just bought a used Nova 3000 this week and have put a couple of hours turning on it so far. I love the lathe except for one thing - the tailstock. I'm having a couple of problems with it.

First of all, it's a pain to lock it down on the bed. The lever has a short range of travel (limited by the sides of the tailstock) and I can adjust the screw that attaches to the lever but only so that its too loose or too tight. Right now, to tighten the tailstock to the bed, I have to remove the lever, screw the bolt that tightens the tailstock base by hand, then screw back in the lever, and tighten all the way. Same thing for loosing the tailstock - move lever, remove lever, unscrew bolt by hand. Any Nova 3000 owners know what I'm doing wrong?

Second, the quill seems to not be working right. To move the quill forwards or backwards I sonetimes have to "help it along" by pushing or pulling the quill with one hand while turning the handwheel with the other until something catches then it works fine. A minor annoyance but is there a fix for this?

Purchasing this lathe tapped me out financially but at this point I think my next purchase will be the DVR tailstock upgrade.

>Try taking the tailstock off and spin the block around a few times to tighten it up. The lever should lock the tailstock down really quick. See if you can get an exploded diagram of the tailstock and then take it apart, clean etc. The tailstock was the only thing I didn't like about that lathe was the tailstock. Got the DVR tailstock and that made a real nice improvement to it. Good luck, have fun

>I suffered the same aggravation until I finally threw the lever away. Now I use a wrench from a garbage disposer. It's basically a 1/4" (or is it 5/16"?) allen wrench, except that the bend is at about 135' instead of 90'. The perfect angle. To cure the sticky quill, put a couple of drops of oil in the slot just in front of the handwheel once in a while.

>I bent my lever a few degrees so that it works perfectly now. You can also try to put a washer or two on the bolt but I could never find the one with the perfect thickness.

I quill problem sounds like you have a broken retaining pen or something like that. Take it a part and you may find the problem.

>Dan, Take the tailstock off. Underneath is a square piece of metal that is the thingy that squeezes up under the slide. Turn it one 1/4 turn. Hold the locking lever against the forward end of the unit. Slied the tialsock back in. If still too loose try again. Once you find the correct end to have facing the headstock mark it with magic marker. Also the bolt that goes into the square metal piece may be loose. It should lock down within the rage of the lever. Also make certain the locking lever does not come loose. Maybe some locktite or better yet just some gunky stuff to keep it from loosening. Now for the quill . There is an allen screw that can be accessed through a hole in the handwkeel It locks a half moon piece of metal that rides in a groove in the quill screw. If the half moon piece is not in the groove the quill screw can unwind to far. You can find the blow up on the Technatool web site I think. If not let me know and I'll see if I can scan the appropriate diagrams for you.. Darryl

>Keeping that nut adjusted when I removed the tailstock was such a PITA that I started taking a piece of tape and securing it so I wouldn't loose the adjustment. Turn it 1/4 turns until it is right. You might want to mark one side so you can keep track of what you are doing.

>Once you get the locking plate in the correct position, drill a hole thru it that is a bit larger than a machine screw of choice. Continue on down into the casting and drill a pilot hole and tap it for the machine screw. I know, it sounds like a lot of work but I guarantee you'll never have another moments problem getting/keeping the square locking plate where it belongs. Zip the tailstock off, pick it up and zip it back on. Wonderful.

>Jim don't you know a picture is worth a 1000 words? I'm the proud owner of Jim's old Nova 3000. He upgraded to the 3000 DVR. His modification works prefectly by the way.

>Will Tom, you rascal, thanks for posting the photo. Reminds me that I didn't drill thru the plate but put a screw beside it. Serves the same purpose only better.

>Thank you all for the responses. I got the tailstock lever to work now when tightening to the bed thanks to your suggestions.

Didn't have time to address the quill issue but I think Darryl's solution is the one I need. I noticed that when the quill stops moving forward/backwards it also stops rotating.

I have one more Nova 3000 issue but I'll raise that up in another thread.
