>hey jen,

if you haven't talked to packard woodworks yet, the answer is "Behlen Master Gel Finish". it's in their catalog (and i'm assuming, their website) under part number 125720 for 12 oz. and 125721 for a qt. i haven't seen it in action but my teacher said that it works great. bear in mind that the catalog says that the finish give a slight darkening of the wood, but like i said, teach says that it works. hope i could help since i mostly lurk and don't get to chime in often :-)

>One thing to keep in mind, no matter what finish you apply, the wood itself will tend to darken with time. Maple turns yellow in about a year. Bleaching the wood before applying the final finish will certainly help retain a lighter color.

>Gel finishes do not penetrate into the wood, they only sit on top of the wood. If the finished turning is to handled often a penetrating oil finish is the way to go because it is more durable.

Also any gel finish will pop a grain, my favorite is Bartley's.

Mike, Thanks!

>Mike thank you! I will certainly keep this in mind for next time. The piece that I'm working on is for a silent auction that is this Saturday so I don't have time to order, however I think I got the results I was looking for with something that I had here at the house...which was Minwax liquid wax finish that comes in a reddish orange can. I had forgotten about it and applied it after I sprayed the colored parts with the Krylon Fixatif to protect the markers. It seems to be working out!

Thanks for the research, I'll make a note of it. I wonder if my local Rockler or Woodcraft carry it? I'll check and see!

>No problem! It was just a little payback for the great turnings I get to look at and learn about along the way.

>Hey Ron,

The catalog makes it a point to say that the finish is a liquid even though the title says it's a gel. Does that make a difference? The only reason I ask is because I would hate for the guy teaching me to be getting a different finish from the one he thinks he is.

Thanks for the input!
