Here are 2 Coconut bowls that I turned maybe 5 +- years ago. The one with the butterflies had a crack in it, which can be a common occurance with coconut.

When turning coconut, there are no shavings,instead you get dust, as you experienced.They get everywhere, especially in your socks and can aggravate you through several washings. Note also that not all coconut is this dark red. Some are whitish and not as nice.

>Did you forget something? Like pics? LOL When you said coconut, I was thinking of the actual nut, for some reason. Duh! I guess I think of the tree as a palm, which is probably wrong (no tropical trees here!)
