>Anyone here had any experience with aniline dyes? I just bought some under the Artisan label and am aware of the hazards of the fumes. I have heard of people using air brush to apply as well as directly with brush or rag. Any tips?

>It dawned on me to look in Russ' Corner, and sure enough, there was a thorough article there as well as a link to the product info. Thanks again, Russ!

I am still interested in other's experience.

You can brush it, rag apply it, spray it, air brush it. It's easy stuff to use. I mixed it up in liquid batches and then mix the colors to produce the color I want. One of my friends mixes it up more like a paste or gel (not sure how she does this I've never watched).

I mix it with powdered putty when I need a solid color filler. It's not compatible with some finishes so experiment if you plan on spraying it over something else.

I use the water based stuff because of easy clean up but it does raise grain so you need to take care of that before you spray something.

It's transparent so you see the grain through the dye. This is good if you want it, bad if you don't.

It does penetrate wood very well so be careful if you don't want it to go all the way through a thin piece. This can really be a problem if you want to dye the inside of a vessel but not the outside. That may be why my friend mixes it more like a gel. If I see her today I'll ask about the process. I'm going to the Craft Center to shoot some work and may run into her.

>Besides the good advice already mentioned, you might want to check out Jimmy Clewes video as he has a whole sectioned dedicated to analine dye application, specfically alcohol based.

I talked to my friend and she mixes analine dye with Gesso to make a paint. That way she can easily mix up any color paint you want if you have the dyes.

I keep Red, Green, Yellow, Blue and black on hand. With those colors I can mix any color.

>Thanks for the help. This is real new to me so the learning curve is steep....a stall pattern in aviation. As normal, the WC group is fantastic. Thanks,
