>I really like the second shot. It really shows off the grain figure quite nicely. Good functional bowl design. Just the Beall? Just display or intended for use?

>Nice bowl! I love cedar as well.
What kind of finish did you use? The finish I've liked the best is just buffed beeswax (using a goblet buff on a hand drill on the inside). Finishes that soaked into the wood made the wood too dark and unnatural. I saw one with gloss lacquer and the look or feel was my least favorite.

>Jim, How long did you soak it in the alcohol. I just picked up some cedar this past weekend and want to start turning it.

I used the 3 buffing compounds that comes with the Beall tripoli, white diamond, carnuba wax
I always soak at least 24 hrs on most of my bowls under 14" longer for the larger ones over 14"

>Jim thats a real nice bowl.
I am picking up some cedar this weekend and was wondering if you had any problems with the cedar splitting or cracking.
I have heard that cedar is bad for that.
Thanks

>Carl get it sealed ASAP! it does crack bad! I cut some bowl blanks on the bandsaw forgot to seal one and the next day it was cracked all over.

>You got that right! Cedar is the one wood that I can turn the lathe off to sharpen my gouge and hear it going "snick...snick" before I can even get back to it! LOL

>On the other hand, if the cedar is well dried it can be stable. I bought a bunch of 8/4 air dried (eastern red) cedar and have yet to see it crack. Makes fine small and medium sized bowls and spindles. I do get checking if I overheat the end grain with sandpaper.
