Thanks Doug Liete for this milo. PIC

Dave Smith, Longview, WA

>I got this milo from Doug last January during a visit to Hawaii. Doug rough turned it during a meeting of the Big Island turning club meeting I was fortunate enough to attend. Doug picked me up at the airport bought me lunch and gave me a lot of wood. And it only cost me about $200 for the day trip from Maui. Still cheaper than golfing. I met a lot of great people that day and Doug was one of the best.

The bowl is 6" wide by slightly under 2" high. Walls are about 3/32" thick.

The foot is 2" in diameter and 1/16" high.

Milo is very must like mesquite in turning and grain pattern. Wonderful wood to turn but I have to find a cheaper way to get it.

Finished with two coats of Rockler's gel polyurethane.

Critiques welcome.

>Only one minor criticism. Could we have a more "enlightened" side view? Good looking bowl. I just want to see more of the side grain pattern.

>Hi Dave,

Nice bowl!! I did a wood swap with a friend from Hawaii a couple of years ago and got some milo to turn. I really liked it and the way it turned. I like your form for this one.

Thanks for the pics,

Mike

You're welcome and thank you

Hawaii Turner

>for coming to Hilo and presenting your Alky drying process.

Folks, this guy not only flies here from Maui on his own, but he brings wood to trade and several pieces for our show and tell and donates all but 1 to our club to sell to supplement our treasury. The last piece, he gives to me for my wife. What a guy,eh? Now, how could I not fill his suitcase up with wood for the return home.

Dave, I am glad that you got to finish that Milo bowl. The pics do it good.

Aloha,Doug

Aloha Doug, will on the big island in December

Dave Smith, Longview, WA

>Hi Doug,

I still owe you some holly but I have not come accross any white pieces yet.

The coconut bowl that Herb gave me is still waiting for me to stabilize it. When I started turning the dry coconut there was an instant white out in my shop even with the dust colector running. I have been working on a solution and hope to get that piece finished soon. Sandy has already claimed it. That milo bowl is probably not going to make it out of the house either. Thanks again for the wood.

We are taking the whole family to Hawaii for Christmas. We will be staying on the Kona side. I don't think I will be able to do much visiting with turners this time around.

I can taste the malasadas from Tex Drive-in already in Longview, WA.

>You're turning a coconut? That should be interesting! What happens when it dries? Is your shop full of ants yet? LOL Do post some pics when you finish it.
