oneway stronghold chuck for a mini

>I have a Jet 10-14VS and I saw that Woodcraft has the Stronghold chuck on sale. Is it too big a chuck for the Jet Mini?? If so would the Talon be better? I am hoping to get a bigger lathe and I would like to be able to use the chuck on the new lathe. Thanks Wayne

>I looked at it for the same reason. It is much heavier than the smaller chucks. I am planning to get one for my big lathe, now that I have one.

I think I would go with the Talon. I've used a larger chuck on my Nova mini and it does work but you can definitely tell when you start it up that it is a heavier chuck.

>I agree! I think it is inertia. Puts strain on the motor and belt just like a heavy blank would. Unless, of course, you have a motor that ramps up to speed.

>When turning a heavier blank on my JET 1236, I always start the blank spinning by hand before pressing "start". It's easier on the motor & machine, and less of an opportunity for the drive spur to strip out of the wood when initially turing blanks between centers.

>You may want to consider the Nove Midi chuck for about a hundred bucks. I find it is capable of turning 95% of what I turn. It will handle up to 12" bowls.

>Another vote for the Talon. I use a Stronghold on my big lathe and the smaller scroll chuck (same size as the Talon, not geared) on the mini.
