provided then install a deeper cabinet upon it so I can have a deeper compartment. Seems like if it fit tightly it would be stable enough. Or am I missing something?

You don't really have to fit that tightly. If your drawer cabinet has sufficient weight to it, it will provide enough stability. When I built the ballast box and the drawer unit for my 1642 EVS, I just cut two 2 x 4s to length and put them in the "slots". My ballast box is not screwed to the 2 x 4s. It just is a tight fit. The drawer unit is screwed to the ballast box.
I think that if you make a unit with "wings" that will fit into the legs, you will be fine. Just take the inner curvature of the legs to account. (DAMHIKT)
