1 x 8 nut

>I have several drive centers. all of them work fine on my Jet 1014 (mini) but one (just the one)--a two pronger I got from CSUSA--just doesn't want to come out of the spindle. Some times I have to beat on the knock-out bar like I was driving rairoad spikes and even then it doesn't come easily if at all.

I used to have a cheapo Grizzly and it had a 3/4 x 16 nut that threaded on the spindle. All you had to do was crescent wrench the nut and any stuck drive center or other device would come free.

so I'm wondering how common 1 x 8 nuts are and where I would get one if they're not that common?

Or any other solution to my stuck drive center would be appreciated. I don't want to ruin the spindle bearings.

>First of all, if at all possible I would quit using the drive center that gets stuck all the time. Sooner or later it will ruin the internal Morse taper in the spindle. Pounding hard on it will ruin the bearings too.

1"-8 nuts are fairly common if you know where to get them. Some hardware stores like Lowe's carry them, usually in one of the metal drawers where they keep the metrics, grade 8, and other odd parts. Tractor and farm supply houses are another good source. Tractor Supply sells bolts and nuts by the pound, much cheaper.

>1" X 8 TPI is a standard USS size, in other words if you go to a supplier and ask for a one inch national course nut you should be given a one inch nut wuth 8 threads per inch. If you have trouble getting some at a hardwre store or a home centre just try a heavy truck dealer or heavy equipment dealer. Hope this helps, good luck.

>As far as the drive center that gets stuck: Try a little emery cloth or Krokus (sp?) paper on the outside of the drive center's taper (do nothing to the lathe as the other centers work fine) and rub around th ecenter with the paper. What I believe you have is a slight bur on the drive center that you acnnot see or feel (a micro-burr) clean with WD-40 or something like that to remove any sanding dust you created. Rub the center with 3-in-1 oil and insert into your headstock (after you are sure the headstock taper is perfectly clean) and try one more time. If it still gets stuck - throw it out or make CSUSA replace it, the taper angle must be incorrect and could ruin your lathe.
