New piece needs something?

RevDoug

>I need help. I did this for a challenge on another board, but it just doesn't looks right. Was supposed to be a bowl mounted on an unused lid. To me, it looks like an elevated base under a bowl. Where did I go wrong? What should I have done differently? PLEASE, give me your suggestions and critiques.

just my opinion

>I'm just a perpetual beginning turner, I read about turning way more than I actually get to turn, but here's my take:

It looks like it's supposed to be one piece, not a bowl plus a base. The whole shape looks more like a goblet, but the cup portion of the goblet is chopped off -- too short relative to the height of the stem, and possibly too small in diameter relative to the diameter of the base.

Keep the base....

>and throw the bowl away and start over. Honest Doug, I don't see any way to save this one. I remember the time when I was learning and was so content to make shavings that I didn't (couldn't) plan my shapes well. For beginners it is best to follow the rule of thirds or copy a piece that looks good. Training the eye takes a while; be patient with yourself.

My opinion...working to save

Craig Daymon

>I have a hard time throwing away anything I turn, so I'm always thinking about ways to fix stuff.

When I look at this piece, the strong contrast between the bowl and the base is far too pronounced. I don't think shape alone will fix that.

I would try to turn the base just below the bowl into a bead (with possibly a second smaller bead below that) and create a flat area below the bead(s). I'd cut a slight groove just below the bead and another about (I'm guessing at proportions here, so adjust appropriately) 3/4" down from that. I'd wire burn the grooves and do a burnt, texture in between the grooves. I think this darker area will help dimish the strong contrast effect. If I did 2 beads, I'd consider a wire burn between.

Of course, it's just a thought and at least it's a little more practice for you if you are leaning toward the fire pile like some are suggesting.

>Doug, the base doesn't look like an 'unused lid' and to me look too heavy for the bowl portion.

The bowl looks to be highly figured, but the base is too plain and light in colour to compliment it.

I don't like to throw things out so I would try and save it by taking the base and making it look more like a lid. above the slender stem I would probably try and make it much more narrow with some kind of finial shape, then sort of cut the finial in half with a recess in the middle. If possible I would try and shape the base of the bowl with a more pointed finish that would fit into the recess in the finial.

Are you still going to try and enter the challenge with it?

It's the base of the bowl.....

tdaniel

>The bowl needs to start out more flat; what is killing it is the pointed base of the bowl. With the base the bowl would look better if it were shaped more like a soup bowl.

>Proportions and balance on pedestal bowls are probably more critical than on any other bowls. In my opinion this one just doesn't work, for several reasons. The shape of the bowl itself is a difficult one for a pedestal bowl. It would have been better if it were more open. The pedestal is much too large and the dissimilarity in the woods just won't work here. If you have more of the wood that the bowl is made from, I suggest that you turn a couple of smaller, shorter pedestal and try them. Play around with it until it seems to have a better balance.

In my classes, I always have students draw a sketch of what they plan to turn. Changes can be made along the way, but the sketch is very helpful in turning a piece that has good form and balance. If you plan to go further with this piece, I suggest that make some sketches first.

Sorry to be so blunt, but you asked for an opinion.

>You are all givein me what I am looking for. I usually don't have trouble with the design aspect, but this one got away from me somehow.

Ruth, this one was a second piece in case we ended up with an odd number, so it really doesn't matter. I am just determined enough that I want to figure out what in the world went wrong and if there is any way to fix it.

I think I'm going to take it back to the lathe and see about doing more of a finial with a flat platform on the very top that holds the bowl. May even narrow the bottom of the bowl a bit more. Who knows, I may just blow it up and turn it into more shavings for the compost pile.

>Just a thought but if you want the two pieces to look like a bowl with a lid, start out making a bowl with a lid. If you put that lid on that bowl would they look good toghther? I think the lid is way too big for that bowl. Once you get a nice bowl and lid see how it looks with the bowl sitting on top of the lid.

Mike

BTW I never fix anything. If it doesn't turn out right it goes in the trash and I start over. It saves a lot of time this way.

>The dissimiliar woods conflict rather than complement each other. I love the white wood of the base, but I don't care for the upper bowl. When paired together, it's worse. Keep the base and turn a new bowl to mate to it. As for the the upper bowl......Winter's coming........and that woodstove is gonna need to be fed. Just my opinion.......and I'm certainly no expert.
