Extra banjo for Jet Mini?

Mike Rubes, Apex, NC

>Hi all,

Lately, I've been finish turning a lot of bowls that I had roughed a year or so ago. Almost invariably, I find myself trying to push the limits of my Jet mini and doing bowls in the 9 inch range. This means I cannot slide the banjo under the bowl when the bowl is in the chuck. I like to work the inside and outside together as I work my way down from the rim to the base, so I was thinking that if I had an extra banjo, I could have both on the lathe, one in front of the bowl and one behind the bowl, back with the chuck, and just move the tool rest, or possibly even have two tool rests, but I am not sure how that would work for grips, etc, as I work on the inside and outside of the bowl. However, I think the idea of having the double banjos might work fine, even with moving the tool rest.

As it is now, I am constantly taking the bowl/chuck off the lathe, moving the banjo, putting the chuck/bowl back on the lathe, etc as I move towards the base. Does anyone happen to already do this dual banjo approach and if so, how do you like it? Likewise, does anyone know where I can get a replacement banjo for the Jet Mini? It doesn't have to be a Jet piece, but it does have to have the same size hole for the tool rest post.

Thanks,

Mike

>Mike, if you go to the Jet Tools web site, and look at the Jet Minis, at least one of them will have a link for replacement parts. The site is closed for maintenance right now, or I would give you a direct link.

I am actually considering getting an extra banjo myself. It will be used for a long tool rest.

I am not sure if they have the complete assembled banjo, but they sell all the parts, and they look reasonable in price.

>I bought one from their parts dept. - 1-800-274-6848. It is part #41 on their schematics, or JML-41 "Tool Rest Body".

If you can't get the information, let me know. I can fax you the schematic and parts list if you'd like. Larry

P.S., you have to order the other small parts too and put it together, which is no big deal.

>I have done that and it works great, but two tool rests at one time will get in the way most of the time. It goes a lot faster just moving the rest instead of removing the chuck and bowl. I found a used one for $25. You can get in touch with Rick at General Industrial in Nashville and he can price one for ya. Here's there link.

I also have an old 12" lathe that I sometimes put the extra base assembly on so that I can turn bigger bowls on that lathe also. Works great. In fact it was Rick that set me up with a rest assembly for my old 12" lathe. I started by using my Jet mini base and the old rest on it until I got the 12" base. It is a 1936 Delta/Rockwell.

Good Luck

Spindle Xtender

>Hi Mike,

Funny you should ask this question now, I just ordered a buffing wheels kit and an extender so I could buff the inside of large bowls, what I received was an spindle extender, without the Morse taper, so it lets you mount a chuck or a face plate but not a spur drive, it is a massice chunk of metal that gives you five inch extension, that would create the space needes to place the tool rest on the outside and let you work there.

So I am considering keeping this and order the one for the buffing wheel.
