Turnings this week

Pete in Holland, MI

>After a dry spell in wood supply, I discovered enough cherry, black walnut and spalted maple this past weekend to yield me nearly 100 rough turned 10-11" bowls if I keep at it for a few more days. Building up my green stock so I'll have something to play with later this year.

Learned a few things thus far this week:

1) Black walnut & steel wetted by the walnut juice nearly permanently stains your hands.

2) The new Wolverine grinding system is REALLY COOL. Keeps a better tip on my gouge than I could by hand.

3) With the use of a small squirrel cage blower and a piece of pipe to extend the blower discharge aimed towards the fire pit core, the damp noodles burn more readily than just smoldering under ambient conditions.

4) You folks with a lathe outside, near outside, in a garage or detached workshop have it made. Easier noodle & waste block disposal than us folks working in our basements. Fewer concerns about shavings being tracked thru the house. Have been considering doing this bulk turning next year in my back yard under a shade tree.

5) A new belt on a Jet 1236 does make a difference, though still only light cuts can be made at the larger (9+ inches) diameters, else the belt slips on the drive pulleys.

6) A 16" swing lathe would be really nice, though not visible on the horizion from where I stand.

Having lots of fun. Learnign a lot about tool control. Hope to start peddling some bowls next fall/winter.

Sounds like you had fun. I can't believe you haven't bought 2 Oneways. You must have more time than I have. I can get wood easily but simply don't have time to turn it. I give most of it away at our club meetings.

I desperately need to turn a piece to give to the guy who gave me some walnut logs. I don't know when I'll have time to do it. I won't get home any night this next week before 8 pm and 2 nights have to work until 10.

>John -

Family was out of town on Sunday, so that day was open (radio turned up on a classical station..... it was great !). The other 3 days started about 7pm and lasted till 10-11 pm. Just gotta make time once in a while. I do know the no-time thing. Been there.

>Pete,

Try lemon juice to get the tannin stains off your hands. Works like magic. I think most citrus juice will work. I get the staining from wet mesquite. These days if I get more than a day a week in the shop, I'm lucky.

>Pete: Have you tried "Belt Stick" by Duro.

It comes in a spray can and was considerbly more popular in the days of flat belts, one of which I have on my old machine lathe. It still works on V-belts, but you don't want

to over-do it and stall your motor.

Let me know how it works.

>We spent week before last on Ft Myers Beach. The weather, pelicans, dolphins, sun, sea, and sand were beautiful- lots of time but no lathe. Now I'm back to work and my toy is in the basement, but still, no lathe (no time). Wonder what I gotta put out to have a 1236 UPSed to Ft Myers? I can see myself turning right on the beach- there is a perfect vacation!
