First Bowl

Fred G - Cincinnati

>Okay, in spite of Mr. Wright's lovely maple salad bowl, I thought I'd suck it up and show the first and second bowls I've turned. The first one is maple, nothing fancy, strictly practice, but I like the outside shape.

Thin wall

Fred G - Cincinnati

>I did, however, have a little trouble keeping the wall thickness consistent. I kinda squared off the bottom, and the "corner" is about 1/16" thick. When I first saw the a light ring around the bowl, I thought it was a gouge or some sanding that wasn't quite right, but it was light showing through the wall! I was a bit nervous that I'd bust through while I was turning it, but it held together. Thanks for looking.

>Hi Fred,

That is a very good bowl for your first one. Here are a couple of tips from another amateur. The transition from the side to the bottom is commonly a trouble spot. You have to swing your gouge faster there than when you are doing the sides or bottom. I accidentally made some funnels because I didnt get that right. 2nd point, you left the pith or center of the tree in the bowl. That makes the chances of the bowl cracking as it dries greater. I like the bowl shape also, especially if it is a bowl that will be used. It is popular to make the bottom smaller in proportion to the bowl on the Art bowls. I hear the AAW chapter in Cincinnati is a very good one. If you are not a member already, Im sure joining would be very beneficial to you. I belong to the club up in Cleveland and Its amazing how much Im learning from those talented turners.

>tek & JL,

Thanks for the kind words and the tips. I did a bit better with the transition on the box elder bowl, so I'm learning. Leaving the pith was intentional, especially so with the box elder bowl, since a lot of the figure I wanted would have been lost. The maple bowl sat for over a year once it was roughed, so I don't think it'll go anywhere. The box elder bowl actually did end up with some cracking, but I filled those with CA & sawdust, and now I can't even find them.
