An email from Don

Ron in Drums PA

>I received this today from Don Pencil. With Don's permission, I'm sharing this with everyone.

-------------

> Ron,

> I am truely sorry for the delays. A good customer should be able to expect more from a vender than that. Some of the posts on Wood Central are accurate.

> I can certainly understand your frustratsion. In the past two months I have had to deal with my mother's two hospitalizations (one in intensive care), a computor crash last week (the reason for no reply until today), some backorders from my suppliers, and do to all of this I have been traveling excessively these past two months between Southern California and Northern Washington. I and my wife live in Southern California and my mother is in Northern Washington.

> I am not caught up yet but I am getting there. The computer is back up as of yesterday and my mother is recovering well. She is 80 and it will take awhile. Some of my supplies are still backorder but they to are catching up.

>I read your e-mail from this morning. As your order was prepared to ship today I have choosen to send it to you as a "gift". I sent is via UPS this afternoon. It has always been my policy to do the best I can for my customers although it is not always possible. I am just a one-man show and it can get crazy.

--------------

I appreciate Don's response and as a small business owner myself I can understand problems can arise. In my book family comes first, always, no matter what, period.

I'd would like to share an experience I had and how I handled it.

A few years back, we had a family crisis where I had to close my business for a few weeks. At the time, I was a one man show and I didn't even want to think how much money I would lose. It scared me to a point where I honestly thought I wouldn't recover from this set back. But I took some steps so my customers wouldn't go to my competitors. On all my email addresses, I setup an auto-reply messages something like "Due to a family crisis will be closed this week, when we return we will be happy to return your message, thank you for your understanding". We setup an answering machine message with the same basic info.

When I finally reopened and because my customers where informed I was swamped. I believe I didn't lose any business and may have gained some good will as well.

In closing, I may have been to short with my posting, and a good chance I was wrong about Don. I'd like to apologize to Don and everyone else who may have taken offense. I'm Sorry,

>Thanks for the post, Ron. I didn't take offense at your post so much as I was waving a caution flag. I think this forum is more powerful than we realize and the effects on a small business person for good or bad can be enormous. I think you and Don both handled yourselves well, and once again, thanks for the post. Very classy.

Now, lets get turning!

>It's good to know and good of Don to respond. I understand the family illness thing...my Mom was hospitalized for 2 months this winter and I was her sole caregiver when she got home. My business suffered. People couldn't get me and needed their computers fixed so they called someone else. Yeah, I understand computer crashes, too! :)

>Thanks to Ron and to ALL who posted messages prior to this. Being far from perfect, there have been times in the past when I have failed a customer. Generally though I believe I have a good record. Still there is great room for improvement. Comments both positive and negative on this forum as well as individual messages sent directly to me, now and in the past, have been of great help in sorting things out. Again, thanks to all for the comments.

It has been an interesting three years and it does keep getting better. It is do greatly to imput from you the woodturners to manufactures and designers of woodturning tools. As of this week I am currently caught up with the orders of individual woodturners and only having problems with the backorders that concern distributors. That problem should go away next week.

I do all of the design, some of the manufacturing, all of the quality control, all of the assemblly, all of the office work, most of the printng and all of the shipping.

Getting raw materials on time (or at all in some cases), getting the machinist that do the outside cnc work to get it done on time, getting my manufacturing done on time, hoping the the plating will get done on time, and then filling the orders to get them out can be a thrill.

Does not leave much room for hickups in the system. I sure would like to have a little more time for turning.

I believe I have a good line of tools and therefore business is good and growing. It is not a hobby business. This is what I do.

If there are any lingering issues that I can address, please feel free to post them here on Wood Central for discussion, e-mail me directly, or call me.

I hope I have provided you with quality tools at low costs and good service. Please let me know where I might improve.

Thanks and Be Well,

Don Pencil

>Thanks for the post, Don. It really helped clarify some of the problems mentioned here on WC. I hope your mom's health improves.

Also thanks to Ron for giving us an update on the progress.

Last, thank you both for handling this problem like true gentlemen!

My Thoughts

Jim Shaver - Oakville, Ontario

>Hi Ron,

I think your apology is valid and required, but I know that many here accept that and we can move on.

It's hard to run a small business as Don says and you support his comments yourself, some of the posts were not my type of post to read ad I did not like the tone of some at all.

Ron,

As big a man as Don is to send it to you as a gift, I think you can be his equal and support him with a payment in full for it, he deserves that I feel...my 2 cents.

take care,

Jim

>I as a supplier to the turning market can understand the problem of this man and hope you all give the opporinuty that you would expect from yourself in a simalar circumstance. I really dont think that anyone involved in this group and puts their name forward would do intentionally any thing bad. Give the patience you would like to receive in a simalr situation.
