PM/JET safety cage

John K Jordan

>Does ANYONE use the big wire safety cage that Powermatic/Jet includes with lathes? (I use the 1642)

If not, what did you do with it? Make a rose trellis, rabbit pen, cool grille for the car, drying rack for pile of bowls, gravel sifter, 1/2 a wheel for a really big hamster???

It looked so cumbersome I didn't even try using it. I've never seen one in a photo except for vendor ads.

>It gets in the way of the DC hose. Let's see, DC or safety cage - DC wins hands down. I do use the tool holder on my 1642 though.

>I have a PM 3520a and never use it for intended purpose. I elected to leave it on, but always "open". Makes a great place to throw my face shield when not using it, and I also attach my dust collection hose to it with wire hooks.

Use mine all the time on my Delta

David Sophusson, Custer Wa.

>This is a pic from one of my BBQs a couple of years ago. Hovey Moore is using my Midi and Jennifer Shirley is using my bigger Delta. As you can see the cage is on the back and there is a plexi-glass guard on the front. It does leave enough room for dust collection. I find the guard very useful especially when David Propst is around, ummm lets just say he can be very aggressive when roughing out a bowl blank, NASA we are good for launch! ;-)

Sophie, Sophies 7th Annual BBQ is on the weekend of August 6th this year.

It saved me!

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Sophie, If it weren't for that plexi or whatever it's made of, I would look a lot different today than I do. I had a blank between centers that flew off and smacked that thing extremely hard right in front of my nose. Had it not been there. I would have suffered serious injury. As you can see in Sophie's picture I'm not playing very smart and wasn't wearing a face shield. I honestly don't think I've ever turned without one since. I suppose I thought I didn't need it with the plexi there.

I hate to say it but....

>The way the so called "safety cages" are mounted to the lathe they only catch flying debris that is going AWAY from you. Unless you are trying to protect others who may be watching from behind the lathe I cannot see what good they are. It is far better to place your body out of "the line of fire" should things go wrong.

Thing drove me crazy. Of course it was a short trip.
