>I use the Milwaukee self feed bits like electricians and plumbers use. You can get extensions so you can drill to any depth. Just be sure to file the threads off the self feed center screw. You dont want the bit to self feed.

>Ken, I think some people think it's cheating to use a drill. Having said that, I sometimes use a forstner bit. I have also used a self feeding bit and a paddle bit. I like the forstner better because it does not have the long lead point int he center. There is less of a drill mark to remove from the bottom. Unfortunately, I have a set of cheap forstner bits I got at Costco. A set of about twenty for about a buck a bit. They work fine for many things, but they are not too thrilled with end grain. Smokin! Also, I shoved the tail stock back out of the way (not far enough) and got a nice burn on the inside of my right arm.

>Ken- that's an awfully wide hole! I use a 3/8" long shank electricians bit with wooden file type handle and stabilized with Vicegrip. A sliding rubber washer gives me depth gauge.

>Thanks. That is what I've done in the past. A friend told me his method of drilling a larger hole. It makes sense to me. Less work removing material. Am I missing something?

The gouge is a lot faster

>Ken,

Removing the material with the gouge takes a lot less time, that back stroke method, or whatever is called, it is very agressive and the wood gets out of there in less time it takes you to look for the drill bit, let alone taking the live center out, bringing in the Jacobs chuch, inserting the bit etc.
