>I just finished rough turning a small bowl (5 1/2") and placed in an alcohol bath. It sank right to the bottom? This is a piece of maple cut from a "Y" at a tree service yard. It is a piece of hard maple I believe. The piece it came from had no checking or cracking so I assumed it was green, however it turned as if it was dry. Having never turned green wood it was not what I expected from what I have read.

Any ideas as to why it would sink? I would think dry wood would float, and all the chips that came off this piece are dry, no sign of moisture at all.

>I have only put two blanks in DNA so far, both soft maple and both sank. I figured it was normal. Is alcohol lighter than water? My memory of chemistry is nil!

>Alcohol (DNA) specific gravity is about .79 .... What floats in water does not necessarily float in alcohol.

>Getting off topic, but a fun demonstration for kids is to let them put various pieces of wood into water. All the dense tropical woods I've tried sink - the kids can't believe it!
