Anyone want to swap Wood?

Anyone want to swap Wood?

Barry Irby

>I have cut a number of walnut and cherry trees for lumber. (Good Grief, flat work!) I have numerous pieces left that would make great turning blocks. Probably some as big as 11 or 12 inches.

Anyone want to swap? The post office has those Priority Mail cartons you can mail for $7.70. You could pack one with some type of wood you have access to that I don't have here in eastern Virginia and I could send you something you might not have. I have not check on other mailing or shipping methods, but whatever. Just don't want to ship them by slow boat and have them spalt along the way. My wood is green and would be Anchor Sealed. I don't know a thing about international shipping, but am willing to learn.

>Carole,

I would be happy to sell you some. Let me know what the biggest piece you Can turn is or what size pieces you would like to have. You pay the shipping and the price is right. Also, how do you want the blanks prepped. I'm thinking bowl blanks 10" in diameter, cut just below the pith and some bark on the back which will become the bottom of the bowl. Send me an E-Mail. If you get a chance, ask at the post office how the cheapest way to do this is. I can ship it UPS also, send me your physical address so I can check out the shipping.

>I live in Chester, just south of Richmond. Where would you like to meet and how much do you want to trade? What size pieces you have? I can handle anything up to 16" in diameter. The pieces I have here now are ranging for ten inches up to maybe 14". Some of them are crotches and are not prepped at all right now. Send me an E-Mail, I can track them better.

>Hey Barry,

I ship wood from time to time, and I find that Fed-Ex Ground has better rates than USPS or UPS either one on pieces the size you are talking about. I shipped a 35 lb motor to Dave Smith from TN to WA for less than $25. VA to VA should be real cheap.

>Other then the $7.70 Priority Mail boxes, DHL is about the least expensive for shipping.

>My step daughter had a mesquite tree cut on her property which was 23" minimum diameter at 4' above ground. Of course the trunk was only 7 1/2' to the crotch.

Re: What is your definition of "big"?

Barry Irby

>That's big. I don't know much about mesquite, but thought it was a sort of gnarled bushy tree that did not get very large but produced very interesting lumber, full of defects or should I say beauty for anyone willing to work with it.

This is what I wanted to do. Trade with someone who might not have walnut or cherry and get something I might not have. I've ween bits of mesquite in places like Woodcraft, but never bought any. It's the familiarity breeds contempt thing. I have walnut and find it beautiful, but ordinary. I don't have mesquite and would like to try turning some. So I thought it might be fun to trade some of this stuff around. Nothing to lose except the shipping.

>what are the interior dimensions of that box?

I have some spalted maple and myrtle, some myrtle burl, some quilted maple 1x stock, a little black walnut, tho afriend will soon be cutting down a black walnut tree and giving up most of the wood (snicker)

If your interested I would like to do some trading.

>I happen to have two boxes, one is 11 x 8 1/2 x 5 1/2" and the other is ll 7/8 x 3 3/8 x 13 5/8". The Postal Store mentions another that is 12 X 12 X 8" but the local post office did not give me one of those and I think that is the exterior dimensions. The others are the interior dimensions. The shipping on those is $7.70 up to 70 lbs I think.

I have just cut a combined total of about 5000 BF of walnut and cherry, so I have plenty of those. I would be happy to swap you some of either for some myrtle or myrtle burl. I have pieces here that I can get at least ten inch and maybe twelve inch bowl blanks out of. What I've got is the parts that did not work well for lumber. Short pieces and crotches. There is more still in the woods, but its about thirty miles away. Let me know what you would like and I'll try to send it and you can send me what ever you think is fair. I enjoy turning bowls and vessels and my lathe will turn stuff up to 16", but the boxes are not that big. Send me an E-Mail with your shipping address.
