Carnuba?

Carole in VA

>I dropped my block of carnuba on the concrete shop floor yesterday and it shattered into a gazillion pieces. Can I melt the pieces over hot water and reform a block? Will heating it change any of it's properties? Some of the pieces are still big enough to charge my buffs with, so if I am going to ruin it by melting and reforming I will leave well enough alone.

>You can reconsititue it in a double boiler just fine. In fact, any grit that got in it should settle out in the bottom of the pan.

>Keep the pieces that are still useable as useable. You can melt the rest as Mark says in a double boiler. I make my own finishes and melt my own carnauba as well. It originally comes as flakes. I use chocolate molds to mold the carnauba. I use the clear ones. Now you can make your favorite shape wax, even Micky Mouse. =o)

>You can also take some of the shattered pieces (and your double boiler) and mix them with other waxes (i.e. beeswax or paraffin wax). You can then recast them. This way you can get some "softer" wax blends.

And when you are finished,,,,,

>And when you are finished with the double boiler, you can make some lovely bon-bons with a nice wax coating that won't melt in the summer heat. Won't melt in your mouth or your hand.

WOW! Excellent idea ! .

>Diet candy. I guess they have to be swallowed whole so the carnauba coating will be intact.... there is always a downside!

Reminds me of the BEAN diet. Very good when pants don't fit anymore. Very economical too, the beans are recycled ....

Here is how it goes: Get a half pound of dry beans, any kind. Every morning (you can drink your morning coffee first if you like) you take the beans and throw them up in the air. Then pick them up one by one and put them in a container. You are not allowed to bend your knees....

I'll stick to my bicycle. Right now I'm putting books and magazines back on the new bookshelves I built. Unfortunately I stored them all upstairs when I moved in so it's up the steps get a stack of books and then back down the steps. I really should sell or give these things away.

>Funny you should mention this, Barry. I was reading the back of a bag of jelly beans (black ones, yum!) and they are either coated with or contain carnuba wax.
