3520A outboard spindle thread?

>I am looking for the thread on the outboard spindle to setup my lathe fro vacuum chucking. No where on the WMH site or in my manual does it call out what the thread is, its a pretty fine pitch. Does anyone know? TIA

Yours is threaded?

>Mine is not. Mine has a slot for a key. Huh.

I'll have to go out and measure the thread. I had my handwheel bored to fit the same bearing I use on my Nova Comet so I can just swap the vacuum between the two. It's pretty easy to make an adaptor out of a sealed bearing.

On my old lathe I glued a block of wood on the handwheel and then bored it with a gouge to fit the bearing. That worked well. I was having my handwheel drilled to be used an an index so I had the same machinist bore out the hole for the vacuum bearing attachment.

>I'm with Mike, my PM doesn't have threads on the outboard side either, it's a smooth body so the indexing piece slips on an attaches with a grub screw. Maybe this is a new model addition?

>How do you have the oneway vacuum attachment on it then Mike?

Ill have to take a cloaser look at the spindle, The drawing in the manual shows the handwheel threaded with two set screws.

OK so its threaded for the bearing preload nut, but is smooth under the handwheel.

So like I said mike, how did you get the oneway vac system on there?

18 tpi

>Assuming you're referring to the 3/8" of thread that you see on the outboard spindle between the headstock and the handwheel. I measured it with my handy-dandy thread gauges and it's definitely 18TPI. My calipers say the diameter looks like 1 and 1/8" (but it could be metric). The portion of the spindle under the handwheel is not threaded - the handwheel slides on and is held in place with 2 set screws.

Harvey

PS - Mike - I got my 3520a around the same time you did - so yours is probably threaded in the same way.
