Elsworth grind...work? I mean I know it does work, because I've used it, but why choose the spindle gouge over the bowl gouge? Aren't spindle gouges a little less stout? And wouldn't that be better for when you're reaching into a box or vase with little or no support?

I use both but my spindle gouge is quite narrow and I have a grind similar to the ellsworth grind on it. I use is mostly for small boxes. I can turn the entire box with that one gouge. Oops that's a lie. I use a parting tool to cut the lip but other than that I use the spindle gouge.
I prefer a bowl gouge for larger boxes for the reason you mentioned. It's simply stronger and has less vibration. Although If I had one of the new P@N spindle gouges that might become my favorite box and goblet tool.
