Dave Smith-- Follow-up

>I had to wait for a curved tool rest that would be tall enough before I could start re-turning the large magnolia bowl (16"".

I trued the tenon and chucked up the bowl. Then I trued the rim and marked it as you suggested. The distance between the pencil marks is 15/16. I started with a wall thickness of 5/4.

Rather than take the bowl all the way down today, I took the wall thickness to 15/16. I am going to give the wood some time to adjust and finish turning it tomorrow.

I was very pleased with the minimum distortion of this bowl. This magnolia has widely spaced growth rings; I would have expected more movement.

15/16 walls from 5/4 rough = PDG

>Hi Barbara,

Is that the magnolia you said had cracks around knots and a crack in the rim? Either way your success with a 16" magnolia bowl is good to hear. I'll have to search for the other post about the bowl to see when you roughed it out and the drying time. I still don't see me turning any large bowls soon so feedback like yours is very helpful for me.

The old rule of thumb of 10% thickness would mean the walls should have been roughed to 1 5/8". By having only 1 1/4" walls when dry means a lot less dry turning to do. If you trued each side in steps I doubt there will be much movement. What I mean by steps is to remove the high spots from the outside and inside alternately until both sides are true. I speculate that truing the outside completely before truing the inside does not relieve the stress on the walls evenly and will require returing the outside again. I have not done a controlled test yet, and may never do one, but since I have started alternating between outside and inside when reducing the high spots I have experienced no major movement of finished bowls. The same procedure is good for platters.

Thanks for the feedback and I look forward to seeing a picture of the bowl.

>I was very pleased. I still have a very large holly bowl and two not as large cherry bowls that are still loosing weight. Actually the one cherry bowl only lost .03# this past week so it is probably ready. Next week I will take off the paper and let it sit a little while. I will share the data when it is collected.
