WHAT WOOD IS THIS???

>i think this is maple but im not sure. it has very unusual grian feature. the wood was given to me by a friend he said he got it from a swamp but it has this unusual grain feture we call it turtle shell. has anyone seen this before.

It will help the mystery lovers among us if you give a little more information, especially where you live. If you're in Maine or New York, I might know most species you would find .. If you're in Pasadena or Memphis, I wouldn't have a clue... The bark will also help a lot.
