more on dry turning

ken chase

>I recently posted about some timber I was given from a tree removal service in Palm Desert CA. This wood is DRY! no moisture left at all. I don't know what it is but one piece I turned is quite attractive with a rich brown color. Most of the peices I've cut so far have a number of cracks. The turning is slower but not that much different except for the heat coming off the gouges. I like the fact I no longer have to worry about leaving the lathe without bagging the piece and worrying about cracking. And ,of course, now concern about worpage. Comments invited.

Thanks

I turn a lot of dry wood. Mostly because the pieces I turn require it. I enjoy it although I do have to pay more attention to dust collection.

Read all you can on green wood working and you will find that you do more and more of it. Read about wood movement as much as possible. I would recommend The John Jordan CD and based on what I hear Bill Grumbines video is awfully good.
