Maple prices?

>I have an "opportunity" to get some 16/4 maple (don't know if it is hard or soft). Some is spalted, but not punky. Some has ambrosia "tracks". The boards are about 10" wide x 8' long. What is a good price to offer for it?

>Its hard to say if we dont know the quality of the wood. Hartzell Woods charges $3 Per board foot for 4/4 Select Hard Maple for #2 grade of that. At the Select price his boards would be worth $ 8 for each foot in length. Silver Maple runs less it would be worth $5 a running foot using Hartzells prices. This doesnt take into account most places usually charge more for thicker lumber. Figured Maple runs much higher than plain. These are retail prices. I wouldnt offer retail to an individual unless the wood is exceptional. Also those prices are for S2S kiln dried wood. Wood that isnt dried or planed should also cost less. Off the top of my head, without seeing the wood, I would offer him $15 or $20 a board. Id go more if it had good figure or spalting. In the end it depends on how much you want it and how much he wants to sell it. A good deal is one where both parties are happy.

>It is kiln dried. I have seen the wood and it has a very nice figure. I wouldn't describe it as "select" as it has spalting and/or ambrosia figuring. Some parts even have the small holes (probably worm holes). He wants about $2/bd. ft.

>$15 to $20 a board is only $0.55 - $0.75 per board foot. 16/4 maple would tend to be a lot closer to $6 bf.

If the guy is selling for $2 bf you are getting a good deal. If you don't have room to store the wood or projects to make from the wood then it's just a lot of wood that you have to trip over.

So much wood so little time.

>I saw the wood - I immediately thought "BOWL BLANKS!". I figure I can cut it up into managable chunks and have 8-10 blanks.

>I recently bought 8/4 kiln dried hard maple here (12" wide, 16' long, rough) for $2 per board foot. This is about what maple goes for air dried from a sawmill near here so I'd probably start off offering your guy less.

The guy was also selling slabs of soft maple 4" thick with some ambrosia marks but the stack had been left out in the rain too long. I bought one piece about 3'x5' off the top of the stack for $10. It was spalted through but pretty punky in most places. I got a few good vase and bowl blanks from it. I may go back and get some from the bottom of the stack that was more protected from the weather.

Also bought 12/4 figured cherry and 8/4 canary wood (tarara). I forget what the cherry was but the tarara was about $6/bd ft. This guy has a lot of wood he's trying to get rid of, but his prices are too close to retail for me.

>$2.00 a BdFt is reasonable. I knew that $15 or $20 a board was a lowball bid. It's hard to guess when you can't see the wood or meet the seller. Some sellers just want to unload wood that they have no use for, and some want market value and know what that value is. Ultimately the buyer has to decide if the wood is worth the price. A bargain is only good if you get something of value out of it.
