>One of our club members called me tonight about his Jet Mini. Evidently the lathe was attached to an extension cord that came unplugged. When he plugged it back in nothing happened. He has power to the plug, but the motor won't work. It is too late for me to take my tester over there to make sure he has power from the switch to the motor.
Do these motors have reset switches? I have had two of these lathes for several years and haven't had a minute's problem. His lathe was purchased two weeks ago.
>The only problem I've had is with the toggle switch from turning the lathe on and off so much.Sometimes you don't get that little click when you hit the switch.I have the VS model. If the lathe is only two weeks old,I would bring it back and get a new one before he runs into more trouble down the road.
>Of course you shouldn't run these things off of extension cords. That can (if the cord is long and isn't heavy enough) lead to an under voltage condition which ends up causing the wires in the windings to become warm. You said the motor was cold and there was no "electrical" smell. So chance are that the extension cord was heavy enough and short enough that there wasn't enough of a voltage drop in the extention cord to make any difference.
There are lots of posiblities. I look forward to reading about the details and the resolution to the issue.
Don't know about the Jet Mini motor, but some motors have a manual reset to prevent them from coming on unexpectedly after an overload etc. I'd check for the reset first, then if that doesn't work I'd "tap" on it with a hammer. Good Luck.
