Sooner than you think

Mike Schwing from Md.

>I could swear I just posted this, but darned if it shows up. I got a jump on Santa gifts this year. A BIG jump. Not sure why, these are just the colors I chose to use for this 15" maple burl platter. Sanded, sealed and then airbrushed with translucent red. The gold was then brushed on - Liberon Gilt Varnish. Then the whole thing was sprayed with probably 15 coats of Fuhr water based lacquer. Hand rubbed to a severely high gloss. Some lucky person will wind up with this as a Christmas gift, if I don't turn it into a gallery first. For some reason my camera does not like photographing red objects. It wouldn't come even close to the proper color rendition nor would it really focus well. Colors adjusted in Gimp, but they match pretty well. I'm pretty happy with this piece, it was the first color job I have done other than on my carvings. Color is nice and even and not too thick to obscure the figure.

Comments/questions/critiques welcomed. Thanks for lookin'!

>Very pretty mike. I like the dye. I'm going to dig mine out the boxes and start coloring and finishing my first project in my new shop.

My Nikons at work don't shoot red very well. My Canon does better. I haven't shot the canon enough to know what colors it doesn't do well but I assume digitals are just like film. No film Iknow of will reproduce all colors correctly.

>Mike,

The red and gold are screaming Christmas gift! Great job on the finish. I bet it feels good to be spinning round again after da bug!

I never realized that some cameras don't shoot certin colors very well? I learned something!

>That's georgous, Mike! The gold really adds the ultimate touch. I don't know of any digital camera (or monitor) that doesn't seem to have trouble with reds. The red I see on my monitor is probably totally different from the red you see, but I like it!

>Sorry I got to thinking of cold weather again and forgot. I really like the bowl. If you keep this up I may have to buy an air brush.

Did you ever think of trying lacey inlace with that red dye? I bet that would work nice for Xmas

>Great looking platter! Translucent red? Is it dye?

waterbase? What kind of sealer. I have an Iwata air brush but only very thin material will work. Shellac was not a good choice.

Thanks

>Hi Mike,

Very nice! With the red/gold combo, it really does seem to be very seasonal so I think someone would love it for Christmas. It's a little hard to tell from the pic, but it does seem to have enough color to be bold, but yet the grain show through.

Nice work. How do I get on your Christmast list? :)

Thanks for the pics,

Mike

>Mike,

Very creative, thanks for sharing. What dye did you use?

About the color reproduction problem, try using a white background or light gray, you may get better color in the red.

>Thanks everybody. I wish the photo was better because I'm very pleased with the way this came out. It looks like an expensive piece of store bought art in real life (in fact it might be!). I tried several different color backgrounds in an attempt to get a better pic, but this was the best. Still, I had to use very low lighting and a wide open aperature - so it is dark and out of focus.

As for the color, it was done with Createx transparent red airbrush color. I did the front and back differently but they look exactly the same. The front was done by spraying color on bare wood with a thin coat of sealer, and then cleared. The back was done by first applying several coats of clear and then spraying color, then more clear. I'm surprised that there is no discernable difference. It is quite a chore to rub out something to a glass smooth gloss, but I followed Mark Kauder's suggestions with good results. I wet sanded/polished all the way up to 12,000 with micro mesh, but I could still see little scratches, so I took the 3M finesse it to it, but still saw scratches, so I then used the bealle wheel with only the white diamond at a slow speed and it put on a glass smooth finish with zero scratch marks. It sometimes sucks to be so picky.

>Les, I have a medium tip badger 100 and a fine tip brush, too. That lacquer won't spray through either of them, and I didn't want to thin them. I've been spraying it through a 1.3mm tip HVLP conversion gun. While not totally happy with the atomization vs. NC based lacquer, the smell can't be beat (none), and the clean up couldn't be easier (water). It is absolutely crystal clear. The one issue that has to be paid careful attention to is time between coats. If you go too long the layers will form on top of each other rather than partially bonding, or as with NC lacquers - melting into each other, and you will see witness lines when you rub through a layer.

I just finished up my "test quart" and plan on buying a gallon.
