Finishing Butternut

>Have just made an end grain bowl from Butternut that I have finished with Walnut Oil. Came out darker than I wanted, but that's ok. Am looking to buff the bowl with tripoli and diamond compounds but am a bit worried about using white diamond compound on a wood with such an open pore structure. Will the diamond compound embed itself in the open pores? Tahnks

>I think I might stay away from the white diamond and possibly even the tripoli on the Butternut. It would be a bummer if you ended up with either one embedded in the grain. Perhaps just a carnauba wax buffing? This is a picture of a recent Butternut bowl that I turned and finished with just Danish oil and Rockler wipe on Satin gel poly. Sanded to 600.

>Like you I was afraid of the white diamond, so I used just the tripoli. The shine was great. I used Watco natural oil.

>If you still have a cutoff from the blank you might use it to test various buffing and polishing methods.
