endgrain vase

>I sarted my endgrain vase the other day and now I've got another question or two.

I got a pretty good exterior shape. Today I drilled in from the "mouth" of the vase. I began to turn away the inside. At first it went beautifully but I guess the hole I drilled was too small in diameter, By the time I got down to about four inches in, I was having a pretty hard time making any progress.

The vase is to be slightly hollow and I just couldn't get a tool rest down into the vase to support the gouge and I couldn't get it to "bite" right there in the center. I've still got about an inch to an inch and a half to bottom out.

Am I doing something wrong or was it just the quarter inch drill bit?

Any advice will be appreciated....

>I use the Irwin electrical 16" bit. The bit and twist end is 1/2" and the shaft is 3/8". I mark with masking tape desired depth. Use vise grips to hold. Safer than a handle in my opinion(reduces twisting). This bit works fast. It is very sharp. The 1/2" hole will let you use hollowing tools or scrapers. Better for me than my 1/4" bit with handle and much faster than using other bits with your drill chuck. Highly recommended. GT

You probably drilled too small but I suspect the problem might be the way your gouge is sharpened or which gouge you use. I don't bore holes anymore in mine. I just use a bowl gouge and i can shove it straight it. I push it in about an inch and then pull it out and hollow 1/4" to 1/2" at a time depending on the vibration of the piece. Once I've hollowed out a little I push the gouge in some more and hollow more. If it's going to be a thin vase I may hollow to final thickness as I go.

>John,

I was using a Ellsworth bowl gouge and also another narrower deep fluted bowl gouge with a "Irish" grind. I had the tip of the gouge lined up about centerand the flute to the left. Is that right? It worked like magic on the early part of the hollowing but towards the end I don't think I could have pushed the gouge in especially with it on its side.

Any tips? Advice? Corrections?
