Box Elder Pot

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Hey Everybody,

Here's another "experiment" from my lathe. This piece of Box Elder is about 4.5" diameter and 5" tall. I used a Micro Torch to burn the inside of it as it was suffering from some serious tear out that I just could not get cleaned up. I really like the way the torch took care of the tear out. It's rustic looking but you don't look and feel the inside and think Oooo...tearout. I put several coats of Watco Danish oil on the inside and out and then several coats of Rockler wipe on gel poly. Thankfully the scorched inside doesn't come off in your hand after the finish is applied. This was an incredible piece of Box Elder and the color here is pretty accurate.

I had never used a micro torch prior to this. I ran down to Home Depot just before they closed the evening I was making this, to buy one and while using it on this piece it broke. The start button malfunctioned and the thing wouldn't light without using a secondary lighter. So I finished this bowl and took it back the next day for a refund. So I'm still looking for a replacement. Any suggestions on a reliable one? I really love the smaller butane torch as opposed to a bulky propane one.

Comments welcome.

Jennifer

>Fantastic Piece of Wood!! The bowl is alright too. ;>)

This torch works pretty well, but I got one from Grainger that was twice the price, and I have liked it alot. Use it for many things around the shop, but not on a bowl yet.

>Two beautiful pieces! I like hopi bowl and this is one beautiful piece of box elder that you've used to the fullest. It works well with the blackened interior.

I'm off to get a torch for my tear out. =o)

What a great idea!

>Looks wonderful too! What brand was the torch you bought that broke? I was thinking about looking for one, but don't want one that is going to croak the first time I use it.

>Carole, thanks. I can't remember the name of it, but I bought it at Lowes, not Home Depot like I stated. I know it had a yellow casing and black foot that allowed it to stand up on it's own. It was $22. and some change. Avoid it if possible.

>Absolutely beautiful work Jennifer! The forms is great, and I think the charring on the interior worked on this one, too, even though it normally appears just as you said - as a way to disguise tool marks or tear out. It appears to have been planned on this piece.

>Wonderful Jennifer.

I've done two small vessels with this inside black also. I poured some india into the hollow then swirled it around. I'm happy with the way it came out, maybe you can try this.

>Hi Ron,

Thank you :)

I love the look of India Ink too. However there were a couple of voids on this one that I'm sure would have created issues with a liquid form of blackening the inside. I have also been using a black leather dye that has given me really neat results. It comes in a glass bottle with a wool applicator on a wire. The depth of blackness is fantastic!

Thanks again,

Jennifer
