Cherry, Hopi Indian symbol Bowl

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Good Monday Everybody,

Here's one of the latest ventures from my shop. It's a piece of cherry about 10" diameter. It is burned with a traditional Hopi Indian design. I then used black Prisma Marker to fill in the burned designs. I bought a book a while back called North American Indian Designs that is full of the different symbols and designs used by many of the tribes. This one was drawn freehand in pencil with a few guidelines penciled in while the bowl was still on the lathe. I do all of my drawing and burning with the bowl still in the chuck, but over at the bench, just in case I need to take drastic measure and turn away some serious boo-boo's. hopefully this will not always be the case as I gain confidence with the burner. It's quite cumbersome!

It has 2 coats of Watco Danish oil right now and will get about 4 coats of Rockler wipe on Gel Satin Poly. I'm still trying to get the hang of my burner and the different pens. Seems each new piece gives me reason (or just want) to buy a new pen for the burner. I wished I had the micro skew tip for this one. I originally had the design on the foot as well, but my skew tip was just too large and it looked crummy so I turned it away and left the foot plain.

As always, I'd love to hear any an all comments. Also, if anyone knows what this particular symbol or pattern represents I'd love to know. Unfortunatly this book doesn't state the meanings of the symbols and designs.

Thanks for looking.

Jennifer

>Jen,

This is truely an outstanding piece. Probably the best I can remember of your work (not that the memory is that good these days). I like the raised center bowl section. I don't usually like the thick bowls, but the design help alieviate the heavy feel of it.

Definately one I will show my wife, who has started the woodburning stuff, too.

>I agree, normall the thicker bowl isn't pleasing to me, but I think it fits the piece perfectly..I have just started using a woodburner, and it is clumsy at best at times, but you did a great job...I like the bowl, the burn, and the finish...Dennis

>Looks great to me. I like your ingeunity. Your design demands a thicker bowl, besides how else can you do it. Well maybe a lip. What's more, it looks almost like you make a separate thin bowl of the same wood to set inside it. Atta Girl. I want to see more please. GT

>Hi Jennifer,

Very nice bowl! I love the shape, design and thickness of this piece. I am trying to leave some of mine thicker and am finding that in some ways, it is harder to do a good thick bowl than a good thin one. This one looks like it makes it.

I like the box elder one up above as well. Very nice also. I don't think I am brave enough to take a torch to a piece I've turned :) That box elder is very beautiful. I like the simplicity of the form as well.

Thanks for the pics,

Mike

Very cool

Andy Halterman: After work bike ride!

>Funny you should post this. I just got back from yet another trip to the big canyon in AZ. Whilst poking around on the S. rim near our trailhead, I came across and old house circle. That place was loaded with pottery fragments, many of which still showed some great detail in the painting. There were several which had designs very similar to yours. Very cool. I love southwestern indian designs. Oh, bonus was I found 4 good arrowheads including a little bird point.

Nice work Jen.

>Thank you Andy,

Wish I could say I'd just been to the south rim too. My brother and his family just got back last week from a haul out there. I loved living in Arizona. It really leaves an impression on you that never goes away. I'm hoping to get back out there next February for the symposium.

Thanks again for the kind comments,

Jen

>Absolutely beautiful work. I enjoy seeing your work and and especially appreciate the descriptions you include. As others have already said this piece is outstanding.

I'm curious about how long the burning process takes for a design such as this.

oh, the shame. (symbols explained)

>Jen,

I can't believe the forum moderator has let you post those pictures. And for you to naively claim you don't know what they mean! Ha ha, good one!

Well, perhaps shame is too hard a term. I guess it's not all that bad. What you have there is the universally accepted symbol for "I am hanging a half pyramid from this palm tree".

Nice work. ;-)

>Hi Tom,

Thanks for your kind comments. I would guess the burning took about and hour or so. The Prisma Marker actually took longer on this one, because I started off with a really dark brown and then decided to go with black over it.

Thanks again for the nice response.
