Bearings for JET Mini

Craig Daymon

>I seem to be in need of some bearing sets for my JET Mini. (For various reasons.) I need new bearings for the head stock and, for some reason, I also need new bearings for the live tail center. In the manual, these are parts:

#6 - BB6005VV - (Headstock inside bearing)

#7 - BB6004VV - (Headstock outside bearing)

#53 - BB6002ZZ - (Live Tail Center bearing)

I googled for the parts and for JET parts, but came up empty. (Lots of links, no matches.) Anyone know what bearings these are? I understand there is a standard for specifying bearings, is that what JET is giving here in the part numbers?

If I can get the standard bearing numbers for these parts, there are a number of places in the area I can pick up the parts.

Thanks in advance,

Craig

>those look like the jet part numbers.. in order to find aftermarket equivalents your going to have to take them out.. measure the widths the sizes of the inside diameter. and the outside diameter for each of the bearings and search the various industrial bearing mfg websites..

you might get lucky and find a replacement on mcmaster.com

if you are able to find aftermarkets that are exact matches.. post the info here.. i know as a jet owner myself there are a lot of these lathes in service.. and you will probaby save $$ overall in the long run..

best of luck

>Those numbers should be fine without the BB (Ball Bearing designation) in front. VV and ZZ denote the type of shield/seal the bearing has. Personally, I tend to use 2RS shielded bearing (2 Rubber Seals). Try a search for 6002 2RS and see what you get. Talk about dusty conditions! ;-)

>Ed is right, I replaced my about a year ago, andI could have gotten them from a bearing shop in town. I know I saw them in the Grainger catalog.

However, they also happen to be a common bearing for ATVs. I ended up getting them for about $5 each (one third the Grainger or Jet Prices).

Google them.

>You should be able to take those puppies out and take them to any good bearing place and get them matched without a problem. There should be a number on the bearings themselves and may have nothing to do with the Jet part numbers. You might have a choice to get plain ones or double sealed.....if so, go for the double sealed.

Here are the numbers !

Fred in NC

>The bearings are 6004-2RS and 6005-2RS. They are metric sizes. They are a very common size, for riding lawnmowers and go carts. I have seen them listed at all kinds of prices, from very cheap to way too expensive.

One link to ebay:

Most bearing houses stock these.

>Hi Mark,

I don't think I need to replace mine just yet, but it is certainly possible in the future. If you don't mind detailing how you go about it, I'd love to know so I could file the post away for future use.

Thanks,

Mike

Gonna buy me a set and put them in the toolbox for later in Apex, NC!!

>Hey Mike,

When you gonna come down to some of the symposia that we have down this way?

Have you heard anything yet on the NC woodturning symposium for this year?

Anyway:

1) Loosen the allen head set screw that holds the handwheel on, and then slide the handwheel off.

2) Going through the back trapdoor, loosen the set screw in the top pulley assembly.

3) Now pull the spindle out via the lathe side (not the handwheel side). Make sure that you do not let the pulley fall and get messed up.

4) Take a wooden dowel about 10-12", and going through the bearing on the spindle side, tap the handwheel side bearing. This is the smaller of the two, and though pressed in, it comes out very easily.

5) Now do the same through the handwheel end to the spindle end bearing.

6) Now press in the new bearings. I find it is best to use a socket that is the same size as the outside diameter as the bearing, to tap on to drive the bearing in. This places the pressure on the bearing race, and is safe. Just tap around the diameter of the socket to slowly drive the bearing in.

7) Now reverse the process. Slide the spindle throught the bearing while sliding the pulley on. Do not forget the belt!! DAMHIKT

8) Tighten the set screw on the pulley, and install the handwheel. Note: the handwheel needs to be snug, but not too snug. How much you tighten the handwheel adjusts the endplay in the spindle.

Than is it.

Thanks to all, great responses

>Thanks all for all the help. There is a Grainger just down the road here, so I might look them up in their catalog and see what they want.

This was a tremendous help, I really appreciate it.

Thanks, Mark!

>Hi Mark,

Thanks for your note. I've not heard any info on the NC woodturning symposium this year. I'd love to make it down your way some time. I once spent a week in Huntsville and really liked it. Pretty country down there.

Thanks for the bearing information. I was under the impression you really needed some sort of arbor press or something to get them on and in place. I think mine are OK, but I've saved off a copy of the directions for when they do go. I've had to replace the belt on my Jet Mini, so I was halfway there once already!!

Thanks again,

Mike
