punkey wood

>I am turning or [should I say sanding] a very punkey piece of spalted maple. No commits about sanding. I rough turned it but tearout is realy bad, so I started sanding . The sanding is removing the soft wood to fast. So I soaked it with thinned lacquer, to firm up the wood. My question Is, is this a good way to firm up wood or does anyone have a better way of firming up punkey wood. Thank you Greg

That's my preferred method although I haven't tried the diluted yellow glue method. The thinned lacquer soaks in really well and firms up the wood. It does clog sandpaper worse than not coated wood so I try to use cutting tools as long as possible.

If it's just a small area that's punky I'll use Thin CA glue but it's so expensive I use lacquer mostly.

don't be embarrassed by needing sandpaper. Sometimes it's just the best tool for the job. My friend who is a production turner doesn't waste time trying to fine tune the finish with a cutting tool. He graps the 120 grit and cleans up the tool marks and then switchs to 220 and he's done. He'll turn a candlestick in half the time I do and I'm pretty quick.

>Hey Greg,

Minwax makes a product called Wood Hardener. I have used it in the past with good results. Terry Daniel used it in gallon quantities on one of his big poplar bowls.

I don't know how the price compares to lacquer, but I would assume that it is about as cheap. I know that TD is not one to waste a dollar if he doesn't have to. 8^]

>Give it a glue bath. Soak it in a mixture of Weldbond and water. I use 4 parts water to 1 part glue. Soak it for about an hour and let it dry for 24 hours.

The reason I use Weldbond is because I also do ths with stone I turn and I needed a glue that dries cleal
