Trend airshield help

ken chase

>Just received the Airshield. Directions were to charge battery 24 hours. Is there a way to tell if the charger is charging. The battery unit isn't warm and there is no indicator light. If it is working is it all right if I use the shield after about 12 hours of charge. I'm really anxious and ready to sand a bowl.

Comments appreciated

>Be patient and let it charge for 24 hours as instructed. I forget the reason, but there is one...something to do with conditioning I think. No, there is no way to tell...no light and the unit does not feel warm. You also won't get full performance out of the battery until it has been cycled 2 or 3 times according to the manufacturer. If you just can't stand it, put on a regular faceshield and dust mask and place a fan to blow the dust away from you. I doubt you'll kill yourself with one bowl. :)

>you want to let the battery charge the full time so your battery cells will have the optimum charge.. otherwise depending on the type of cell found within the pack your battery may have what they call a memory and lose some of its capacity to hold a charge.. lowering your operating time and eventually the battery life...

>You are right. It is a little annoying that you can't tell if the charger is working. The only way to tell is to see if the battery is charged. After the 24 hr charge use the airflow indicator they provide. The balls should shoot right up. I dont normally use the airflow indicator. When the air Im breathing starts feeling stale and moist I switch to my other battery. Im pretty happy with the product.

>That all depends on the ampacity of the cells and the charge rate of your charger. If you have 500ma cells and the charger is charging at 50ma, then it will take 16hrs to fully charge your pack. If it is charging at 150ma it will take about 4-6hrs. The cell capicty and the charger rate have more to do with the length of charge time. If you over charge the cells you can cause overheating and the cell can vent causing loss of capacity. There was a thread earlier about nicad type cells and charging. I went into the charge rates (C100, C10, C3, C1). If you are charging at a C3 rate (i.e. rate is 1/3 capcity rating) I would not leave it on 24hrs. A C10 rate would not hurt the cell, but I would probably stop after 16-18 hrs.

The stuff about cells developing memory was for cells 30 years ago. The main thing with the newer cells the same as the older cells, don't over charge (i.e. overheat) them. Properly maintained they will last 5-6 years with what you are doing. Just don't ever run the cells flat or over charge them. Either way is the kiss of death for those types of cells.

>Here's the problem. The connector that goes from the

charger to the battery fits loosely and its shape is

square, not round like that in the manual. Is this normal or could the wrong charger been sent by mistake.

Thanks

>Normal. Mine is square (the hole in the square is round)and the fit is not snug. Charges fine.

>My original battery is a NiCad and fits snuggly in the charger. The newer extra battery is a NiMh. It has a shorter connector and is more rounded on the end. It doesn't fit the charger well. I just use a rubber band to hold it in while I charge the NiMh battery.

>I purchased a Trend last week and had trouble with the battery and charger not making good contact. I was advised this morning that all the batteries have been recalled and new ones will be issued.
