Hollowing A Goblet

Tom Colligan, Peoria

>In hollowing a goblet or lidded box I understand you should use a {3/8} spindle gouge. But what kind of grind would be best? I have the Wolverinve Vari-Grind attachment.

Should I put a side ground on the gouge where the support is in the down position?

Or, should I use a fingernail grind where the support is in the up position? Tia,

>Hi Tom, I personally grind mine way back, I think it makes the tool work easier as a hollowing tool. Less of an edge to get a catch on. That long edge can be used in a back and forth motion( or should I say in and out) to smooth out the cut, removing irregularities.

I use a bowl gouge. I do have a spindle gouge that I have sharpened with the Ellsworth grind that I use for hollowing smaller stuff. My bowl gouge is thicker and has less vibration. I looked at the new P@N spindle gouges. They might work great for this.

>Tom,

You can also make the hollowing with scrapers, I did one using a round scraper; I make boxes, basically the same as hollowing a goblet, with a square and a round.

>When I have a student who is having trouble using a bowl gouge for hollowing I will give them my roundnose scraper. Ihave ground the left side about 1 inch down the side. This makes them more user friendly for goblets and boxes.

>I made a scraper like that for just this purpose. It works better than anything else IMHO.
