>Ron, There is a product called Nelsonite poolcue makers use. I have just started to see what it will do but so far have only used it to help stabalize some very punky wood for a vase. It worked very well. My next attempt is to try and set up a vacuum process but will need to purchase a brake bleeding outfit. I have a vacuum pump but don't know if pulling a vacuum along with the vapors would cause a problem. If that works I'll try mixing in some tint and see if it will draw into the blank.
Thanks!

Keep us posted on your process. I'm interested but not set up to try anything right now. I hope to get my shop in order soon and be able to try something like that.

>What size blanks? I know at one time Bill Baumbeck @ Arizona Silhouette would put other orders in with his stabilzation orders at a per lbs rate .. took a few weeks to get them as he only sends in orders occasionally. If it's not a hot project you might contact him at the link above in the message.
Otherwise there were a few penturners who were experimenting with their own process. I understand it's a fairly intensive chemical process requiring heat, vacumm, etc... not a home shop kind of thing. Check out Penturners.org and post the question on the forum, bet you will find an answer from someone.

>From what Mike is telling me, I might not attempt it. I just got my first box elder blanks and turned a few and wondered if coloring wouldn't spice up some boring local olive wood. I'm wondering out loud if you tried to dry wood with dyed alcohol...hmmm...

>These are for pen blanks. I can get local olive wood from trimmed branches but the grain isn't as intense as the good stuff. I was wondering what coloring would do. I'm in Israel so I don't think sending them to the US would be cost effective. I might try dyed alcohol though on wet wood and see what happens.
I hope to meet Bill B. at the Utah Symposium so I'll chat with him then.
If it's as intensive as you say it is, I just might give it up.

>Forgot you were not in the US -- for sure shipping to the US would be a touch expensive & a pain.
You know coloring & stabilization are 2 different things. I don't see why couldn't dye a finished turned pen ... ought to work well. There was a Canadian gentleman on WOW that was doing some stuff with maple & dyes, it's almost like a tie-die look. Very slick. If you are a member of WOW you might ask there or someone here who remembers the pieces I am talking about might point you in the right direction.

>I already use dyes with curly maple. This is good for very ligh woods with a lot of figure. I put on the dye just before I put on the sanding sealer. Will check it out over at WOWs.
