Jet Mini Problem

>Jet Mini was running just fine....stopped it for awhile and when I turned it back on the motor hummed and it runs real slow.... Could it be that the capacitor on the motor is bad or could it be something else?

>From what you said, it is an AC motor, not the VS.

I would disconnect the belt first. No need to remove it, just push it to one side, so the motor can freewheel.

Try turning the motor shaft to make sure it turns freely. If it does, connect the power and see if the motor turns normally. If it does not, it is probably the capacitor. Careful, a capacitor can hold a lethal charge - be extremely careful. A motor shop can replace it in a few minutes.

>Once you've ruled out the simple things (belt slipping, etc.), Unplug it, Take off the motor (a couple of bolts), and remove the cap from the fan end of the motor. Then, unscrew the two screws holding the capacitor cover (the bump sticking off the motor). Check to see if the capacitor looks anything but perfectly cylindrical, like flat spots or bulgey spots etc., or that the wax on either end may have melted. If you overheated the capacitor, it's done. Depending on how you word it to the Jet Tech line as to when you bought the lathe, they may send you one free. One guy has no problem helping customers, another guy seems to always try to dump you on customer service. Ask for Gayle. Anyway, that's probably your problem.
