Lathe question...

Ellis Walentine

>Hi folks,

I usually am pretty careful about overstepping our "no commercial posts" policy, but I got an e-mail from my old partner, Jim Cummins' widow, Karen, saying that she is finally clearing out the last of Jim's stuff, lo these six years after his passing, and I would like to help her out if I can. So, please bear with me.

Among the effects is a Craftsman wood lathe on a stand, presumably with some attachments and possibly an extension bed. Near as I can tell it is a 12 x 32, although she didn't describe it very well. She said there is another lathe bed there as well, and some attachments.

Apart from getting a digital picture of this old machine, can any of you suggest the best way for her to sell it. I presume that an ad in the local paper makes the most sense, but what would a good asking price be?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ellis Walentine, Host

2. Where is the lathe?

As far as how to sell, I have seen a lot of lathes sell right in our classifieds forum. Matter of fact, I just bought one from the forum a couple weeks ago. I would post there with a pic.

Is my answer kind of obvious ???

>Might suggest she contact a local turners club and find out if there is someone there interested. Also might think of donating it to the club to be used by members who can't yet afford to buy on. Our club has at least one such lathe which is used for demos and loan.

>Ellis,

I sold a monotube Craftsman, 12 x 32, with all the attachments and a few turning tools, all for $90. The suggestion of donating it to a club is good. Or put it on rec.crafts.woodturning and rec.woodworking?

>Ellis,

I tried to sell such a lathe at my turning club. Those high brows laughed at it calling it a boat anchor. I put it in a local Trading Post news paper and sold it in about two days for $75, which was more than I paid for it. Come to think of it, he was towing a bass boat. You don't think? Nahhh!

Now that we have broken the no commercial post rule, I have this old chevy....

Thanks for the good tips!
