Grandpa, can you make a...

>...pool cue for me?

I have 5 grandsons that have a small pool table and they have broken all of their cues.

Are there any instructions and sources for parts to make some short cues for the boys? My daughter doesn't want to pay $30 each for toy cues.

These don't have to be professional quality. I was thinking of using some broom handles to turn down. Then I would need something for the tips.

Thanks for any help.

>Good practice project, Clem. I'd buy some hard maple, though, and do my best to ensure the boys don't do like we would have when we were young, and brain each other with them. Full size cues can really be tough, but small ones for the table top pool tables don't need to be fancy, just straight.

You do like my dad did. He isn't the best turner and his shopsmith has a lot of chatter so He turned them the best he could and then took the belt sander with 80 grit and refined the taper and took out the chatter marks.

>Doug,

The boys somehow ended up with broken cues. :-)

I will need practice turning these and they can help sand and finish them. I might just glue something on the end for a tip.

Maybe they will have more regard for them if they help to make them.

Sounds good to me. I will probably use your dad's method.

>Good site Don.

It's amazing what is involved with a cue stick. I might just glue something on the end of the stick for a tip. It would be less expensive to buy a stick than to get the components :-)

And what I'm looking for is just toy cue sticks.

Thanks for the site.

>Clem,

The stuff for the tip is leather like the one used for shoe soles, glued with contact cement.

>I will pick up my Powermatic this weekend. I too got it through the "Classifieds" right here.

Will turn a short cue stick on my new 3520a.

What is the distance from spindle to tail stock on the 90?

Wow !!!

>Congrats on your new lathe, Clem !

The 90 is a 12x35, with a 3" gap. I am still in the process of setting it up.

>Yeah, some of the stuff is over the top on that site, but I thought you might get some ideas. I see that a box of low-end tips is $9.95. Since, as I recall from my youth, kids bust the tips off all the time, that might be useful. Anyway, they seem to be some sort of shaped leather, so maybe a punch and a scrap of thick hide would do.

Can you make the sticks one piece on your lathe?

>Don,

I have a lathe that is 42 inches and could extend that some by putting the skinny end through the headstock spindle a little way and hold it with the chuck.

By the way, those tips are "EACH" prices. I thought a box would be the way to go but that's not the case :-(
