Does dry mahogany turn OK?

>I have a 4"x6"x13" long chunk that I was thinking of cutting into a couple of bowl blanks. Didn't want to cut it up if it would be a waste cause I could possibly find a use for it in flat work (gasp!) some day. Right now I am just roaming around the shop looking for stuff to turn! LOL

>Mahogany is excellent to turn with sharp tools. Nice shavings and great finish.

>This was done from a piece of 8/4 dry mahogany. Finishes up real nice. Turns OK. More sanding than normal.

>OK. Thanks, guys and gals! The hog will become turning blanks. It's strange that while poking around looking for something to turn this afternoon, I spied a chunk of maple lying over in the woods that I had half turned the outside on, gotten disgusted with catches and trying to make a decent tenon, and thrown to the termites.(It was from back when I had not yet figured out how to politely present the gouge to to the wood.) Picked it up, thought "Hmmm..now why did I chuck this?", took it inside roughed it to a new (for me) style and plopped it into the alcohol. I guess that means I am making progress. It's exciting!

>HI Carole, yep, it carves well, holding good detail, sands and finishes easily. turns very well, will hold beads and coves well. No wonder cabinet makers love the stuff.
