Jorge Castaneda ~ Downeast Maine

>The other night after dinner I was feeding the woodsove and had a piece in my hand when the little voce said, "to the lathe, to the lathe", so I did not burn it and this is what I wheedled (spelling?) out of it. It is my first attempt to a goblet, the wood is red maple, no finish yet.

I like the form of the goblet, the stem seems too long now and the bowl perhaps too deep, The piece is 9" tall and 2 3/4 at its widest, the bowl is 3 1/2" deep inside.

I never did the captive rings before, and I used the skew to shape the outside and make the rings, the rings are concave in both sides.

Is there a way of making them convex? Also I did use the parting tool and I don't like the looks of the bottom, how to make it more finished?

Also if it were to be used for vino, what kind of finish should be used for the inside? I am planning to make one for friends getting married in the summer.

TIA

Jorge

>Jorge,

Looks like a great first attempt. A couple of things I believe would help the next one. The stem looks a bit thick for my taste. If it were just a little thinner, I believe it would look more delicate, giving the whole thing a more graceful look. Secondly, the foot seems a bit heavy. Thin it out more and take the hard edges off. That should get you more where you want to be.

As far as the rings go, you'll need a hooked ring tool to get the rings round.

Turn 'em round,

>Hi Jorge, It's funny, I just did two demos on making goblets. We discussed the golden rectangle, and making the goblet fit into the rectangle.

My suggestions: The goblet "bowl" appears too small in diameter for the overall height. For the diameter of the piece you were working with, you could have possibly gotten two goblets from that same piece of wood.

I suggest hollowing the bowl first, then form the rest of the goblet form while you still have the support of the mass of wood in the chuck. Then, work from the bowl shape towards the chuck, taking cuts down to the final diameter of the stem. That way the cut is always supported by the remaining wood. It's pretty easy to get a 1/4" stem or less with no support on the goblet end.

Leave about two inches of wood near the chuck, this way you will have room to finish the bottom without the tool being in danger of hitting the chuck. I use a detail gouge, rolled over on its side to make the concave bottom, a nice clean cut.

Some turners then make a jam chuck to hold the bowl end to finish off the base. Hope this helps! It helps to draw some goblets on paper, at least to me, just to see how they look.

>Keith,

I wish I attended your demos. When you say:

>We discussed the golden rectangle, and making the goblet fit into the rectangle.<

Do you mean it vertically or horizontally? the results will be very different.

I did follow your procedure more or less, I will practice a couple times without the rings to make it easy to see the shape.

A question: This goblet was made out of a round billet, that means it has the pith on it, so far it has not developed cracks and seems to be drying round not oval.

Thank you, I appreciate your advice.

>Hi Jorge, the rectangle will be placed in the "taller" orientation. You can experiment by stacding the rectangles as well, and then drawing a goblet to fit. hope this helps.
