Sorby or Stewart?

>Will soon be starting to hollow. I note the Sorby armbrace and hooker tool are quite a bit less money than the Stewart. I'll spend the difference if the Stewart is really worth the difference but I don't have the experience to know. Imput will be appreciated. Also the Berger tool looks interesting and I believe it can be used with either of the above mentioned. Opinions on the Berger tools will also be welcome.

Thanks

>Ken,

You might also want to look at the "Scorpion" (with its little brother the "Stinger") from Don Pencil. I have and use them and am quite pleased for the price. Lyn Mangiameli did a review of them and you can read it at: http://www.fholder.com/Woodturning/scorpion.pdf

>All three of the armbrace systems in the post have good merit for certian applications. A captive hollowing system would be best for most hollow turning. There are a lot of different ones out there and most seem pretty good. I use the Lea system and could not be happier. using a captive system sure takes the beating for you and lets you turn for longer periods of time. best of luck, Sean

>Ken,

For armbrace systems, the Pencil system offers the most value. You get straight and hooker, armbrace and quite an assortment of tool bits for the money. As for a dedicated hooker, I prefer the Jordan hook tool the best. It has a refined shape on the hook that seems to accommodate most shapes.

I have my Scorpion set up with the straight and the Sorby armbrace set up with my Jordan hooker. When I want to shear scrape, I put my Scorpion hooker in my Scorpion armbrace.
