Bandsaw question

adrien

>My old Rockwell bandsaw (Delta took them over) has no outlet for a vacuum attachment. After years of taking of the bottom cover and vacuuming out the mess therein and on the floor, I've decided to cut a hole in the cover and attach a hose.

Question: I assume the collection point should be on the bottom of the cover, but should it be in the front or the rear of the cover?

>Adrien,

the 2 pickups on my bandsaw are 4" dia: 1)in the bottom back (on the side panel) 2) just under the table in front as close as possible to where the blade enters the wood (or nails, staples, barbed wire, etc). If cutting some real "cross-grain" type wood i.e. elm in particular, you still have to open the door and clean it out periodically.

>If you put it on the front, won't the hose be in your way when you are standing in front of the saw? Also, won't you have to worry about moving the hose every time you open the cover to swap blades or make adjustments to the blade guide?

WAIT DONT CUT YET!

>There is a much better solution out there to collect dust from your 14" Bandsaw. Before you cut into a wheel cover check it out. They make a sheetmetal dust hood that will bolt onto the bottom of your table with a 5" hose hookup. Its about $30. You can get them from iturra Designs. BTW louis catelog is Fantastic for 14" bandsaws.

>The front duct is located at a 45 angle, so it doesn't stick out too far. When using the bandsaw the operator stands to the side facing the teeth of the blade, so there's no interference from the front duct.

The bottom duct is on the opposite side of the door, the side that don't move.

PM me if you'd like pics.

>Thank all of you for such a quick and helpful set of responses. I think Chris' suggestion re: Iturra's connector sounds the most useful.

>This is the setup I have. It's pretty typical of later model bandsaw from what I've seen.

The ducts are 4". You can get the hard plastic duct ends that are square on the machine side, through which you can drill and attach to the BS with machine screws. The pvc ducting is 4" sanitary pipe, available at HD/Lowes/Ace, etc.

>Chris, I checked with Iturra. Turns out one needs to cut a 2"x3" notch in the cover of the lower wheel. This makes the dusthood less attractive an option.
