Help Powermatic 3520

>Just unpacked and note I have to purchase receptacle plug. What do I ask for at Home Depot?

Also. When I want to use the live center cap do I just screw it on over the live center tip or remove the tip first? And finally...should I add the levelers or try it first without. I guess I'll consider bolting to the floor. What about a rubber pad under the legs? Would that be helpful reducing vibration?

Sorry if these questions are dumb. I'm new to this and don't have a good understanding of anything electrical. Just adding my own plug is nerveracking. I am dying to fire this baby up!

Advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ken Chase (Palm Desert CA)

>Congrats on the new 3520, I love mine. I am assuming that you have a 220v recpt, 20A already in place. Look on the female plug and try to find the model number and note the orientation of the blades and ground. They are usually one blade vertical and one horizontal in the familiar triangular configuration. You could take a rubbing of the female to Home Depot. With these two bits of info you chould be able to purchace the proper cord cap. Remember that both blades are hot and the green goes to the round (green) prong. If you have to add an extension as I did, I found a ready made appliance extension cord way less than making one up. I left the adjusters in the legs as they were the proper height when fully "retracted" and the rubber feet can't hurt with the vibration isolation. I hope your enjoy yours as much as I have mine. >You probably want a 6-20P.

Check out the link below, and find your receptacle type. Then just get the matching plug (P on the end instead of R).

>Hi Ken,I use mine right on the floor without the levelers. This is a heavy machine so vibration is not much of a problem.I do not think I would bolt it to the floor,if it can't tell you it's way out of balance I would think it might be hard on the bearings.Only my opinion.Have fun these things are great!

>I'm no expert but I don't think I would use rubber under the feet to isolate the vibration, either. It seems to me that the rubber would allow the lathe to rock slightly when anything was not perfectly balanced, causing vibration instead of stopping it. It needs to be rock solid with no give. When I got my 3520, I stripped one of the threads trying to get the feet on, so forgot about them. My cement floor is slightly out of level due to a crack, but I just drove a wood shim under one foot. Works fine. Earl

>I used my levelers it helps slide the unit around after you remove the tailstock, banjo and slide the headstock to teh opposite end that you are trying to move. I recently just increased the hieght of the lahe (Im 6') to the max that the levelers allow (leaving 2 threads above the casting. This is alot more comfortable for me.

As for plugs I use (and most of the industry use two horizontal flat blades for 220V under 20amps. it would look like this

o

Home depot has nice ones for $6

Enjoy your new lathe!
